Q: I love to roast a nice chicken about once every two weeks, and then add wine and lemon to the drippings to make a lovely sauce, or add flour to make a gravy. The only problem is that my boyfriend and I have moved in together (that’s not the problem), and he’s allergic to gluten and alcohol, even if it’s cooked down!

Item: Carnivore Club Cured Meat Subscription
Price: $50 per box
Overall Impression: This is a great way to sample artisan cured meats from across the country.

Living in Europe exposed me to all the wonderful delights of cured meats, where they were not only easy to find, but usually fairly inexpensive. Back here in the States, more and more artisan producers are cropping up, but it’s hard to sample a wide variety of them since they usually aren’t as widely distributed as cheeses.

Carnivore Club, a monthly cured meat subscription, promises to “Satisfy Your Inner Carnivore” with handcrafted meats, so I gave it a try!

While Whole Foods can take a fledgling food company and propel it to success, some companies have confessed it sometimes comes at a price.

Whole Foods can demand changes in name or ingredients, or ask for exclusive selling rights to products.

Week 1

Day 1

Warm up:

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Breaking Muscle Swimming Workouts are programmed by Jake Shoemaker, an elite athlete in his own right and highly experienced swimming, cross-country running, and triathlon coach.

The swimming workouts are designed for those whose swimming skills are bringing the rest of their game down. If you’re a CrossFitter or triathlete, it’s no longer acceptable if your swimming isn’t up to par.

Swimming can also be used to condition all the systems of the body for endurance without beating it up the way some other modes of exercise can.

Note: Distances are in yards.

I’ve always found Worcestershire sauce such a funny ingredient — how exactly do you pronounce it? And did you know it’s not vegetarian, as there are anchovies in the original version?

Regardless of its funny quirks, it always has a place in my refrigerator door, especially since it’s one of the key ingredients in my husband’s grilled steak marinade. But what else can this fermented, pungent condiment be used for?

We love the look of a rug under the dining room table. If you have a dedicated dining room, it can make the room feel finished and well-designed. If you are carving a dining space out of a larger open-plan home or apartment, a rug can help the dining area feel more distinct.

But rugs can be expensive, and the occasional spill is inevitable, which is exactly why we’re in favor of using carpet tiles in the dining room instead.

As we walk in the door at 5:45 p.m., the most stressful part of our day begins. Jonas, my 16-month-old, instantly starts banging his little fist against his open mouth signing that he wants to eat. Darby, my three-year-old, runs in asking, “Can you make me a ‘pecial dinner, Mama?” It is a mad rush to find something nutritious to serve them fast — berries, carrots, yogurt, cheese, and whole wheat pasta are frequently seen on their plates. It is all I can muster.

If you spend any amount of time in the kitchen, cooking, or even just eating, dirty dishes are inevitable. And as a result, so is the chore of washing dishes. Whether you step up to the sink with a smile, or dread this task like no other, the dishes have to get done.

In my kitchen, as in others, we live by the golden rule of dishwashing — but I recently discovered that not everyone does.
