A little over 7 weeks has gone by since my dreadful DXA scan.If you remember, it was the scan that ended my brilliantly thought-out  7 week experiment of “what would happened if I stopped training and stopped fasting?”.Nothing good happened in that experiment – I lost 7 pounds of muscle and gained 5 pounds of fat.But now, I’m back in form. And I’m going to take this opportunity to really explore the importance of knowing your body. Specifically, I want to talk about the importance of knowing your measurements. Most people know their weight… some even guess at their body fat, but it’s still the minority of people who actually track their measurements…. which isn’t a good thing.Case in point – It’s been about 7 weeks of fasting and training, and my weight hasn’t changed…at all.  It has fluctuated between 174-176 for the last 7 weeks. Which would drive me absolutely crazy, except I know my measurements.

Measuring your body weight sucks…It really, really does. It’s a poor metric of what is going on inside your body, and use of it as a metric leads to many of our diet myths and fallacies.Have you ever heard people say that they massively increased their calories and their weight didn’t budge?I did that.During my 7 weeks off from weight training, fasting and dieting, my weight barely changed, going from 176 to 174. Heck, when you look at those numbers alone you may even say I’m lucky – blessed with the genetics to eat whatever I want and still lose weight.

Of the Top 20 Worldwide Fitness Trends for 2010, “Strength Training” holds the second highest ranking spot, and has held a top 10 position in each of the past 4 years. It is an important part of an exercise program if you plan to maintain strength as you age, increase your resting metabolic rate (burn more calories while at rest) and enhance the body’s natural ability to burn stored fat. Strength training is a predominate theme at many health clubs these days right along with the cardio machines that offer an aerobic workout for maintaining overall health. National guidelines recommend that we get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week or 20 minutes of intense physical activity three times a week to maintain fitness. Weight training or resistance training should be included at least twice a week to maintain and strengthen muscles.Research suggests that on average, the adults that do not incorporate strength training and exercise in their daily routine, will lose about 4 to 6 lbs of muscle tissue per decade as they get older. Why is that significant? Because your body works to maintain that muscle mass by using up about 5 calories of energy per day for each pound of muscle mass it carries  (even if you are fairly sedentary)

I Had No Idea That A Transformation Of This Kind Was Even Possible (Update From Robert) 6 Comments Monday, July 8th, 2013 Here’s an update from our friend Robert, featured in a previous testimonial here: http://robbwolf.com/2012/12/10/8-months-paleo-lost-70-pounds-people-recognize-me/Written by: RobertI started the Paleo program after being encouraged by my son, reading Robb’s book, listening to some pod casts and listening to several of Gary Taubes lectures on You Tube.  I began about the second week in May, 2012 and was 278lbs at that time.  It is now the end of the first week in July 2013 (so a year and two months later) and this morning my weight was 189lbs.  My ultimate goal is still four pounds away and I am still seeing my weight decrease.  But I don’t think my appearance will change significantly so here are the comparison pictures.  The 1st three are before the diet and the second four are within the last couple of weeks (last two this morning ).Before pics:After Pics:Our exercise routine never really changed.  We are both over 60.   We still try to walk 6 miles each morning at 4mph and do whatever manual labor is required to keep up two houses, lawns and woodpiles.  We have remained as Paleo as possible given the necessity to occasionally eat at someone’s home.  I would estimate that in general we are about 95% Paleo and when we are home, near 100%.  We have no symptoms or arthritis at all any more and intend to continue this type of diet as long as we can cook for ourselves.  We also have been herbalists for some time and often scavenge edible plants when we walk.  They have enabled us to try more truly (non-store bought) fruits and veggies and varied our diet.About a year and a half ago, I was driving somewhere and counting my blessings.  The only thing I could think of that might be a welcome improvement in life was to lose a few pounds.  I had no idea that a transformation of this kind was even possible.  Thanks for all you folks have done with your web site and pod casts to help me!  I now take no medication at all for anything.  I was on blood pressure meds for over 30 years but have been taken entirely off them by my doctor and have not felt this able and healthy since I was about 30.Good luck and best wishes,RobAbout Christopher Christopher Williams (a.k.a.
