Cooking As a Spectator Sport

Unless you live in a cave (not that I would frown upon that), you’re at least somewhat familiar with the phenomenon of Food Network and other offshoot culinary-focused programming. Since the advent of cable television every hobby, interest, niche and daily pastime has been assigned its own channel with round the clock exposition of every conceivable detail. Cooking has been no exception. In fact, the kitchen genre has caught on so much that it’s graduated to network day and evening as well. We’re apparently entranced by watching other people make food – and likely by the images of the food itself. (I’ve heard these shows referred to as “food porn” for their attractive but gratuitous displays.) I’m not much of a T.V. follower, but for years the craze has somewhat confounded me.

A few weeks ago Michael Pollan wrote a great and detailed piece about the evolution and popularity of these […]

The Champion Mindset

I love this photo simply because for me it sums up the definition of success inhealth, sport and in life. This was taken late at night, in a parking garage, under anameless hotel in a European country that I?ve since forgotten. This is a bobsledathlete in the middle of a squat workout. I can remember how cold it was, each breathwas like smoke from a chimney. The kind where if you stand still, it feels like yourbones are starting to chill. It was below freezing as there were ice patches on theconcrete floor. The dull fluorescent lights made a humming sound that seemed to echoin the background.
We carry two portable squat stands, two barbells and about 300K in weightswhen we travel. Thats it. These guys must maintain their weight, their strength, theirspeed to be able to compete at the Olympic level with the aforementioned equipment.Parking structures and unheated garage facilities […]

Continuing on from Part 3 of the Deadpool Mega Muscle Mass Workout…

Psoas
Hip Flexion
In most of my clients, I see the unfortunate combination of weak yet chronically tight psoas (hip flexors).
So, for this muscle group, I like to combine strength training with an aggressive flexibility routine.
So, if you are going to train your hip flexors with this program, you NEED to balance it with some flexibility work.

Heavy Partial: N/A
Isos: Flexing your hip, push your knee/thigh into an immovable object and hold for 2-5 seconds per rep for 3-8 reps. Options include the underside of a table with your upper-body weight pushing down on the tabletop, or leaning against a wall & driving your knee into a stability ball placed against the wall, or this supine method shown in the video

Plyos: N/A
Vibrations: High Knees –  3-8 reps per leg

Immediately after completing the wake up exercise, proceed to a set of heavy/explosive Hanging […]

A Primal commitment to regular consumption of pastured, organic (expensive/hard-to-find) meats often means buying in bulk when a good price presents itself. Grass-fed steak runs rather pricey, so the average Grok on a budget can’t survive buying a juicy ribeye from Whole Foods every night; he’s got to pick his spots and stock up when he can. If that means buying fifteen pounds of New Zealand lamb leg steaks in a single go just because they dropped to four bucks a pound, so be it. Thus, we’re left with freezers full of identical cuts of steak, roasts, and slabs of meat, along with a serious conundrum: what the heck do we do with all that meat? Maybe good meat can stand on its own merit (along with a bit of salt and pepper), but even the purest of carnivores will eventually tire of eating the same cut prepared the same […]

Building Muscle

3 guys sign up for a research study on the muscle building effects of weight training.
None of them have ever lifted weights before, and all three are between the ages of 20 and 21.
At the start of the study they weighed between 130 and 143 pounds (light by North American Standards)
Guy A – 130 pounds
Guy B – 138 pounds
Guy C – 143 pounds
For their given age and weight, each guy has about normal to slightly below average levels of lean body mass (I’m assuming the guys were between 5′6″ and 5′8″).
Guy A – LBM = 121 pounds (about 10% BF)
Guy B – LBM = 118 pounds (about 10% BF)
Guy C – LBM = 132 pounds (about 7.5% BF)
These numbers also make each guy exceptionally lean.
For their given age and weight, each guy has lower than expected levels of skeletal muscle mass. (We would expect about 50% of LBM to be […]

Recommended Warmup

A user asked me today about recommended warmup and cooldown. Here is the answer!
Warmup:
3 rounds of:
10 pullups
10 squats
10 pushups
10 back extensions
10 situps
I also usually add some leg raises and occasionally lunges to the
warmup. And, of course, if the warmup is too tiring, scale it down to
sets of 5 or 3 reps as necessary. The idea is to go through lots of
basic movements using just your body weight.
For cool down, I would recommend some dive bommber pushups,
stretching, and any sort of yoga type moves you may enjoy.

Ab Circle Pro sells for $199, Body by Jake Ab Scissor Ultra sells for $159, and the basic "old school" Ab Wheel sells for $10. The ironic thing is that cheap little ab wheels are more effective than either of these over priced, yet wildly popular, ab machines. The crazy thing is according to the merchant, over 700,000 Body By Jake Ab Scissors have been sold to date. Who knows how many Ab Circle Pro units have been sold, but it has to be a ton judging by all the recent infomercials on TV late at night or early in the morning.

[Getting flat abs or a a six pack is mainly about diet. The Ab Circle Pro advertises that you do "Cardio & Abs at the Same Time". Technically they aren't lying, except that the type of cardio performed will do very little if anything to make a difference.]
I Wish […]

Most days, I love living in Toronto.
It’s a great city. All the culture you could want and you can still walk down the street at night.
But, yesterday, as I was reading my morning newspapers over a cup of coffee, I came upon this story….

more about “Take a Hike“, posted with vodpod
.
…and it pissed me off.
Why in the world would a city bylaw officer harass senior citizens for exercising in a public park?
Why harass anyone for exercising in a public park?
As a nation, Canada is getting fatter year after year.
Our provincial health care systems are being bankrupted by chronic diseases brought on by the same lifestyle choices that cause obesity.
So, why would the city discourage physical activity by ticketing citizens to exercise in public parks that they already support with their tax dollars?
Especially when you consider that way back in 2005, Toronto city council created Get Your Move On…
an initiative formed […]
