Most days, I love living in Toronto.
It’s a great city. All the culture you could want and you can still walk down the street at night.
But, yesterday, as I was reading my morning newspapers over a cup of coffee, I came upon this story….

Why in the world would a city bylaw officer harass senior citizens for exercising in a public park?
Why harass anyone for exercising in a public park?
As a nation, Canada is getting fatter year after year.
Our provincial health care systems are being bankrupted by chronic diseases brought on by the same lifestyle choices that cause obesity.
So, why would the city discourage physical activity by ticketing citizens to exercise in public parks that they already support with their tax dollars?
Especially when you consider that way back in 2005, Toronto city council created Get Your Move On…

College students and healthy lifestyle. On the one hand it seems like the ultimate contradiction. Pizza boxes, Red Bull cans, Doritos bags, beer bottles, Captain Crunch at every cafeteria meal. They’re as much a cultural vision of college as John Belushi’s sweatshirt. If there were a Primal no man’s land, you’d think the residential campus experience would at least be a top contender. Nonetheless, college needn’t be the physical wasteland it’s made out to be. And, let’s be honest: most students do not really live/eat/drink this way. As many students exercise regularly and eat decently as send their bodies through the wringer during their college careers. Nonetheless, campus living is its own kind of existence, and it presents its own challenges for maintaining a Primal routine. The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we’ll use sprints as an example here. Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds Walk for 10 seconds Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets. So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time. The Relevance Of Forms In Kung Fu Training
For centuries and as far as we know forms have always been an integral part of Kung Fu training. They have been passed down through countless generations, and even though the original set of movements would inevitably have changed, much of which makes up the core of the system would still be there.
Some people have suggested that forms were designed originally for the purpose of passing down fighting techniques secretly, negating the need to document them and thus risk having them being exposed or stolen. While others suggest their designed and sole purpose was to provide a pre-determined set of training aids to improve such attributes as balance, coordination and timing, just as we might see a Western boxer using his shadow boxing.

The big fad nowadays among the news organizations and “health gurus” of the world is to proclaim that while exercise might improve your quality of life, only nutrition improves the length. Even I was bombarded enough with this claim that I started to believe it…until I found this study done in my hometown of Jerusalem.
Here’s a quote from the study:
“The three-year survival rate was about three times higher for active 85-year-olds compared with those who were inactive. Getting less than four hours of exercise weekly was considered inactive; more than that was active.”
“The results “clearly support the continued encouragement of physical activity, even among the oldest old. Indeed, it seems that it is never too late to start,” the researchers wrote in Monday’s Archives of Internal Medicine, which published the study.”

Korean-Style Short Ribs

Korean short ribs have an irresistible combination of sweet, salty and spicy flavors. Traditionally, the sweetness comes from sugar or corn syrup, usually half a cup or more. Thanks to Christian Chun, who submitted a fruit-based marinade for Korean-style short ribs to the Primal Blueprint Cookbook Contest, you can lose the processed sugar without losing a bit of flavor.
Fruit provides all the sweetness the ribs need. Christian’s recipe combines apple, Asian pear and kiwi. For a slightly different but equally delicious marinade, try using antioxidant-rich blackberries instead.

The sweetness of the fruit, contrasted with tamari, garlic and rice vinegar, hits all the right notes. The result is intensely flavored and truly addictive ribs. Thursday I wrote about our experience with the CSA box delivery service, which I am defo enjoying. In box 2 we received more delicious grapes, apples, sweet peppers (I just made more hummus with these because the first batch was so good!), red chard, lettuce, yellow onions and some beautiful end-of-season tomatoes. The chard went straight into two soups: black eyed pea & squash (I decided to sub chard for the spinach) and a new lentil soup (soon to be posted). For the tomatoes, I decided to make a big batch of Provençal sauce. Considering I eat pasta for lunch most days it made sense, but I also wanted to take this batch and make it last throughout the week in three different recipes. Heavy Partial: I don’t like partial reps for any rowing exercises
Isos: Isometric Row – Grab hold of an immovable object (ie. heavy barbell, cable stack, piece of equipment, flagpole, etc and try to pull it towards you using a rowing motion. Neither you nor the object should move. Hold for 2-5 seconds per rep for 3-8 reps
Plyos: N/A
Vibrations: Using a light weight (dumbbells, barbell, bands, etc..), perform 1 or 2 handed speed rows as fast as possible. I prefer the bands for this…less chance of injury Remember, think hummingbird wings –  3-8 reps

Immediately after completing the wake up exercise, proceed to a set of heavy Barbell/Dumbbell/Cable Rows – 3-8 reps
