I don’t know about you, but my time is valuable. I don’t have the luxury of experimenting with strength exercises that might work, might be safe, from celebrity trainers who might know what the hell they are doing! All the big forums are filled with ‘experts’ who repackage old knowledge and then act like they just invented the wheel. You have to sift through the BS and find drills that make sense and build strength… for you.
I use four criteria when selecting bodyweight strength exercises:
It has to be simple to learn. Not necessarily easy to master, mind you, but simple to acquire. If I can’t get the basic technique down in 5 minutes, I’ll pass. I’m looking for strength and strength-endurance. If I want to learn technique, I’ll sign up for ballet.
It has to be safe to perform, repeatedly. Look, there are no guarantees you won’t get injured bending over to tie your shoes. […]

Eric Wong's MMA Strength & Conditioning Program

Incorporating boxing, wrestling, muay thai, and jiu jitsu into a comprehensive MMA training that doesnt require daily 3-hour workout sessions is a work of art. But it still isnt enough.
Fighting will shape your body to become flexible, explosive, and lean – but it does so in a natural, slow pace. Yeah, we love natural, but we dont like slow.
We’re fighters, and being slow means we lose! So how can you pick up the pace in your training, gain strength, power, and improve your conditioning for MMA?
Well, you must’ve noticed that fighters have other, more experienced fighters, coach them – and they get paid very well for it.
But of course, not many folks can afford a full-time MMA personal trainer.
Luckily, one of the top MMA trainers in the country thought about this and released the Ultimate MMA Strength & Conditioning program – a complete personal […]

About 20% of adults have flat feet. A small subset of the population suffers from hereditary flat foot, but most of it is developed. Very few of us are actually born with flat foot. In this post I’ll explore what you can do to avoid flat feet in the first place, and if you already have them whether it is possible to reverse the damage.
Since publishing blog posts on ditching shoes, alternatives to going barefoot, and others I now receive regular reader emails like this one:

Dear Mark,
I’ve had flat foot all my life (18 years so far) and always wondered about the cause from an evolutionary stand point, and any negatives that might come from it. I vaguely remember the doctors subscribing foot supports and a lot of unnecessary products which I haven’t used in a decade. I don’t have any problems that I know of, but just wondering if […]

Not everyone is happy with the anti-obesity/anti-soda ad produced by the NYC Dept of Health.

And it isn’t just the people who lost their lunches after seeing that globby/fatty/veiny cup of goo.
It’s groups like the Center for Consumer Freedom.
In fact, the CCF was so upset, that they produced their own rebuttal ad and had it printed in the New York Times

BTW, a full page ad in the Times costs upwards of $158,004.
$158,004
And we’re not even including the costs associated with creating the ad.
We’re talking big money.
BIG MONEY
And thinking about that big money awakened the skeptic in me. And that inner skeptic started thinking…who is the Center for Consumer Freedom and why are they spending a ton of money defending our freedoms against anti-cola advertisements?
So, I did a little research into the CCF.
My findings?
Apparently, there are a lot of people who don’t like the CCF.
To them, the CCF is nothing but a […]

This week, thousands of articles on fitness and health have been written. Here at Passionate Fitness, we comment on some of the most interesting ones and share our opinions about them with you.
First, there are still contest submissions coming in, and while we’re not going to play favorites, we will say that we are very impressed with what we’ve gotten so far. We want to remind everyone to submit an article before the contest ends October 14th.
Here’s our top 5 commentary roundup:
#5 – Mark’s Daily Apple – Choose Your Booze, a Guide to Healthy Drinking
This article choice is for our member, Guzzlinsuds. While the “Primal Living” crowd isn’t known for their drinking, this article did a good job of telling people which drinks to go with. We were happy to see that scotch made the list of something that you could drink, but wouldn’t necessarily agree that Vodka is a […]

I am sure you have heard the excuse of a slow metabolism as a reason for putting on weight as people get older. I remember being pretty thin as a teenager and older relatives telling me to "enjoy it while you can". They would say things like, "I was thin just like you until I hit 30, then my metabolism slowed down". I was told "just wait until you are 30, then you will understand what we are talking about". So I am rolling up on 40 and didn't put on any weight in my 30's. I waited for that big metabolism slow down to hit me, but it never really happened. Was I just lucky or is something else going on here?

[I love black and white photos, especially when they are well done. I chose this particular photo because I love the lighting and shadowing. Plus this older gentleman […]

30 of America’s biggest food producers have come together to form the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation.
It’s kind of like the Justice League of America, but instead of fighting comic book super villains, the HWCF is fighting against obesity.

Their plan is to do this by “helping consumers lead healthier lives by making energy balance – calories in balanced with calories out – a daily habit”.
We will do this by increasing access and opportunities for physical activity, healthier nutrition options and raising awareness of the energy balance approach…
…in the marketplace….
…participating companies are committing to build on existing efforts and will be making changes to their products, packaging and labeling to make it easier for consumers to manage their calorie intake while preserving or enhancing overall nutrition quality.
Specific options companies may undertake include:

product reformulation and innovation;
providing smaller portions;
redesigning packaging and labeling;
placing calorie information on the front of products;
providing consumers with information and […]

It’s the question every Primal adherent faces: how does alcohol fit into a low carb lifestyle? Maybe you’re out with friends, bravely resisting the assorted chips and fried concoctions in the center of the table. You don’t mind waiting patiently for the steak and salad you conscientiously selected, but must you be relegated to the likes of club soda and tap water? What would happen exactly if you ordered, well, a “drink-drink”? A nice glass of red wine perhaps? Hmmm…maybe that’s too much to ask at a place where onion blooms are a specialty…. A mixed drink? You begin reminiscing about those great sidecars your best friendused to make. Maybe a shot? That’s simple enough, isn’t it? How about those memories? Well, maybe we’ll fast forward through those recollections. Beer? Beer belly. What about a light beer? They’re low in carbs, right? Whatever the case, you presume there’s no Guinness […]
