The Office

It’s time to do everyone at your work a GIANT favor.
It’s time to get rid of “Cookie Tuesdays” and “Cake Thursdays”
It’s also time to get rid of the “Cookies and treats at every meeting” mentality.
You CAN make it through an hour meeting without needing cookies…
(Besides..conspiracy theorists think the cookies are just there to keep you sedated)
If you are going to win this battle against obesity…then it’s not a war you can only fight at home.
You have to take it to the office too.
And remember, I’m all for eating the foods you love…but it all has to be within the realm of eating less.
You CAN have cake while dieting..just not at every meeting.
Here’s my final thought from back when I worked in an office that was meeting crazy
1. You shouldn’t have to bribe your employees to go to a meeting
2. The meetings shouldn’t be any longer than they need to be…so […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.
Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds
Walk for 10 seconds
Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.
So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time.
Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.
Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study on […]

Dear Mark,

Since going Primal last summer, my vegan buddy and I have some very explicit differences of opinion. I’m sure you can guess where they come up. Where we agree though is on the subject of sugar, especially refined sugar (syrups, honey, HFCS, table sugar, etc). Neither of us eat the stuff as a rule, but we have different reasons for avoiding it. I give the standard list and his main contention is that sugar compromises the immune system. Is this true? Does eating sugar actually suppress the immune system? I’ve heard this before, but have yet to see hard proof. Thanks.
Thanks for the question. We already know sugar should be limited in the human diet. Most people can agree with that. Here are but a few of its effects on our physiologies. Fun stuff!

It leads to insulin resistance.
It promotes inflammation in the body.
It can lead to weight gain when […]

Calling my lower back "dodgy" is an understatement. I suffered a major back injury close to 20 years ago. Although, I have figured out how to stop it from hurting, it is still a major weak link. I avoid certain activities and I have to be overly cautious, otherwise I am asking for a nagging injury followed by 3 months of major pain. I used to think just "not hurting" was an acceptable level, but my spine is simply too fragile for my liking. Instead of just settling, I plan on working my butt off to make it a strong point. I believe back pain is the most miserable thing in the world and hopefully these tips help people with this nagging problem.

[Car accidents account for a large percentage of back injuries. There are ways to strengthen your spinal column to make it less likely to experience trauma in […]

We can’t think of a better green to welcome in spring than one with an adorable name like Lamb’s Lettuce. Of course, this green has many identities and what you call it depends a lot on where you buy it. In France and in most American grocery stores it goes by the name mâche (pronounced mahsh), in Germany it’s called Rapunzel and in some parts of this country it’s called field greens or corn salad, because it’s known to grow wild in corn fields. But today, since we’re feeling in a spring mood, we’re calling it Lamb’s Lettuce and giving reader Richard Freund credit for reminding us how much we love this green in salad. Lamb’s Lettuce (or mâche, or field greens, or Rapunzel…) is unique not only for its delicate rosette shape, but also for its buttery texture.  It’s usually served in salads, but can also be thrown into […]

I always try to cook seasonal foods as much as possible which is why I shop at farmers markets. I know everything I get there will be in season and local. I actually got this cauliflower in my CSA box so I knew it would be perfect with some simple grilled salmon so as you can see that’s what you’ve got. This is definitely Paleo friendly and is loaded with the good Omega 3 fatty acids.
Simple, healthy and delicious. Brilliant.

Serves 2
Recipe:
2 x 4-5 oz wild Pacific salmon
1 head organic cauliflower – roughly chopped in florets
2 tsp curry powder
1 tbsp agave/honey
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Mmmmm….Strawberries!!!

Here’s a post from Fitsugar. One way to have your strawberries I never thought of.

One of the best things about Spring is the abundance of fresh strawberries — raw, cooked, baked, or pureed, I can’t get enough of ’em. I’ve even been known to freeze baskets of berries so I can still enjoy them after the season ends.

One of my favorite ways to enjoy strawberries is to toss them with balsamic vinegar; the sweet flavors of the strawberries pair nicely with the tart, acidic flavors of the vinegar. This snack is fantastic on a hot day, or a great way to have a light, healthy dessert after a meal. I slice and hull berries from one basket and toss in about one teaspoon of a good balsamic vinegar. Let that soak for about 20 minutes and you’re done. If I’m feeling extra snazzy, I’ll add chopped mint, black pepper, or a little bit of sugar. Eat alone, drizzle over yogurt, or serve next to your favorite cookie.

Try it out…be adventurous you may end up loving it and remember that strawberries have more vitimin C than oranges.

Train hard live lean,

-Darrin
