Shortcut BBQ Ribs
pimg class=”alignright” title=”BBQ Ribs” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/Ribs1.jpg” alt=”Ribs1″ width=”320″ height=”212″ /Sharing a recipe for pork ribs is risky business. First, there’s the matter of flavoring the meat. Is a rub, a marinade, or a sauce the superior flavoring method, or maybe some combination of the three? And forget about finding a rub that all rib lovers agree on. There are hundreds of rub blends, all slightly different from the others, with each cook claiming their spice rub is the best./p
pOnce you finally commit to a seasoning method, then you’ve got to cook the ribs. This is the part that can be really intimidating. Ribs can be cooked on a regular grill, but serious rib lovers invest in a smoker. Cooking ribs can easily take half the day, most of it spent slowly grilling, flavoring and obsessively coaxing the ribs to tender, smoky perfection./p

A Primal Primer: Candida
pimg class=”alignright” title=”C. albicans” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/calbicans.jpg” alt=”calbicans” width=”320″ height=”212″ /It#8217;s been awhile since I#8217;ve done one of these, but I think it#8217;s about time for a Primal Primer. Today we#8217;ll be discussing candida, a genus (more than a species, less than a family) of yeast with many members, at least one of which is currently residing on or in your body: candida albicans. Candida albicans and friends are everywhere, and they#8217;re usually a normal, healthy part of the human microbiome, but it can get a little out of hand. As I#8217;ve mentioned before, a title=”Gut Flora and Your Healthy Immune System” href=”http://www.marksdailyapple.com/gut-flora-healthy-immune-system/”the human gut hosts a tumultuous mix of microbial species /avying for position and supremacy and trying to further their own ends. If all#8217;s well, a balance is maintained, and the various species keep each other in check while promoting good health for the human host. But things can […]

Butler, Party of 3: High Intensity Interval Training & Tabata
I started amping up the intensity of my workouts a while ago with lots of HIIT & Tabata training. This is some serious business stuff, ladies…I’m talkin’ spitting sweat! Men would get out of my way in the gym and ask ME for fitness advice. (I don’t say that to boast- I’m just telling you this is some intense stuff!) My cardio, strength, and endurance ALL improved drastically from implementing these into my workout routines. I’d usually add them on after a 30-35 min strength session so I’d be in the gym for right at an hour total. If you’re like me, I had no CLUE what these were when I first started…(although I did similar workouts on my own sometimes and didn’t realize this is basically what I was doing)…so I wanted to break it down for ya.HIIT: HIIT is a specialized form of interval training that involves short intervals of maximum intensity exercise separated by longer intervals of low to moderate intensity exercise.

How Common is Gluten Sensitivity?
pimg class=”alignright” title=”Wheat” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/wheat.jpg” alt=”wheat” width=”319″ height=”283″ /I#8217;ve long suspected that everyone has emsome/em degree of sensitivity to gluten, even if they#8217;ve never been formally diagnosed and even if they don#8217;t notice any overt symptoms after eating it. Now we have concrete evidence that non-celiac gluten sensitivity actually exists. A recent a title=”Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity Diagnosed by Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Challenge: Exploring a New Clinical Entity.” href=”http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22825366″ target=”_blank”study/a, which I highlighted in Weekend Link Love, confirmed the existence of non-celiac wheat sensitivity. Subjects without the atrophied villi (tiny projects that line the intestines and help absorb nutrients) characteristic of celiac and without positive tests for various markers that indicate celiac experienced gluten-related symptoms after a blinded wheat challenge. It doesn#8217;t give us much of a clue as to the emprevalence/em of sensitivity, but it establishes that such a thing might exist among the general population./p

Is It Primal? – Chia Seeds, Black Rice, Refined Avocado Oil, and Other Foods Scrutinized
pimg class=”alignright” title=”Chia Seeds” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/chiaseeds.jpg” alt=”chiaseeds” width=”320″ height=”212″ /The questionable foods just keep flowing in. As soon as I write a new #8220;Is it Primal?#8221; post, I#8217;m inundated with new stuff to scrutinize. It#8217;s like cutting the heads off the hydra (speaking of which, what are the nutritional qualities of hydra? talk about a sustainable animal food source). Luckily I like writing these posts, so they are probably here to stay. I hope you enjoy them. Well, let#8217;s get on with it, shall we?/p
pToday we#8217;ll delve into the sordid inner world of the chia seed (of Chia Pet fame, yes), the dark underbelly of black rice, the hidden agendas of the refined avocado oil consortiums, the Communist North Korean plot to brainwash minds via sweet potato vermicelli consumption, and how strawberries might actually be trying to kill you (yeah, strawberries). Actually, we#8217;ll just figure out if said foods are Primal or […]

Dear Mark: Why Do We Procrastinate and How Do We Beat It?
pimg class=”alignright” title=”Procrastination” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/procrastination.jpg” alt=”procrastination” width=”320″ height=”212″ /Do you procrastinate? If you#8217;re an actual human being #8211; not a replicant, nor an android, nor an AI #8211; and you#8217;re being honest, then you should probably be nodding your head. But what#8217;s odd about a ubiquitous behavior like procrastination is that it#8217;s almost unanimously regarded as being detrimental to our success, our happiness, and our progress as human beings, and yet we still put things off until later. Counterintuitive yet persistent behaviors fascinate me to no end, because they suggest (at least to me) an evolutionary incongruence at hand. They suggest that in another context, another environment, the counterintuitive was anything but./p
pIs procrastination just such a behavior? Let#8217;s explore:/p

Shakshuka (Eggs Poached in Spicy Tomato Sauce)
pimg class=”alignright” title=”Shakshuka” src=”http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg158/MDA2008/MDA%202011/shakshuka2.jpg” alt=”shakshuka2″ width=”320″ height=”212″ /Whether you’re looking for a new breakfast idea or are fond of serving breakfast for dinner, shakshuka fits the bill. Instead of calling the dish shakshuka you can also just call it “Eggs Poached in Spicy Tomato Sauce” because that’s exactly what this straightforward but surprisingly delicious meal is./p
pEspecially popular in Israel, shakshuka is loved around the world for its comforting flavor and simple preparation. Although the sauce is often sopped up with pita bread, it’s thick enough that you can skip the bread and eat it with a spoon (or spread extra sauce over a hunk of a title=”How to Cook the Perfect Steak” href=”http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-to-cook-the-perfect-steak/#axzz1rkfvTaeG”grilled meat/a for a really fantastic meal.)/p
pspan id=”more-30717″/span/p
pMost recipes for shakshuka call for a title=”Are Your Canned Foods Safe to Eat?” href=”http://www.marksdailyapple.com/are-your-canned-foods-safe-to-eat-a-bpa-free-buying-guide/#axzz1rkfvTaeG”canned (or boxed) tomatoes/a, but you shouldn’t hesitate to use plump, super-ripe fresh tomatoes if you can […]
