Scientists have come up with a formula that is seems to be “spot on” when it comes to predicting childhood obesity. When I first heard about this study, I was skeptical. Not so much anymore.

Here are the things looked at in the formula:

 Birth weight.
Body mass index of the parents.
Number of people in the household.
Mother’s professional status.
Did mother smoke during pregnancy.

This is kind of disturbing. Many couch manufacturers use toxic chemicals as a flame retardant. About 41% of the couches tested contain the same chemical that was banned in children’s clothing back in the 70′s.

It appears that upholstered couches are the most at risk. So not as much of a risk if you have a leather couch.
Quote from article:
The Duke-U.C. study noted that many of the flame retardants found in the couches are “associated with hormone disruption, neurological and reproductive toxicity and/or cancer in hundreds of animal studies and a number of human studies.”
The study says the furniture foam turns into dust and lingers, a potential problem for small children who might be close to the floor and put their hands in their mouths.

Before you read this post, I need a disclaimer. You absolutely can build muscle without machines. What the article I’m referring to suggests is that workout machines will help you reach your potential a bit faster. My suggestion is to use both free weights and machines.

From the article:
Machines are designed with a CAM set up, which isn’t dependent on a single load vector (like free weights or cables). Instead, the CAM system is designed to provide you with a more consistent resistance throughout the entire range of motion, which translates into increased time under tension (i.e. more overload on your muscles) because you don’t get a chance to rest at the bottom or top position like to you can with most free weights exercises.

Mint is an appetite suppressant. The cool thing is that you don’t even need to eat real mint. It is the “scent of mint” that curbs the appetite.

Even things like sugar free mint gum work to suppress the appetite. Another tip to add to your fat loss tool box.

I’m guilty of looking at osteoporosis as a woman’s problem. Obviously I know that both men and women do get weaker bones as they age, but didn’t think in detail about men getting it.

From the article:
The researchers examined 35 men with an average age of 34 years and an average body-mass index (BMI, a measure of height and weight) of 36.5, which is considered obese.
The study revealed that the men with more visceral and total fat in their abdomen had less bone strength than those with less abdominal fat. The researchers noted that the men’s age and total BMI did not have an impact on their bone strength.

Danish researchers have found what they believe to be one of the more optimal setups for HIIT. This type of HIIT is called 10-20-30.

The numbers “10-20-30″ correspond to the amount of time walking, jogging, and sprinting.

30 seconds walking (or low intensity)
20 seconds jogging (or medium intensity)
10 seconds sprinting (or high intensity)

I like to use HIIT sprints for getting extra lean right before summer. Typically I used a fixed sprinting time (or distance) and fixed rest time.

Health Habits outlined an HIIT setup called Pyramid Intervals that look a little different.

Sprint full out for 10 seconds
Rest 10 seconds
Sprint full out for 10 seconds
Rest 20 seconds
Sprint full out for 10 seconds
Rest 30 seconds
Sprint full out for 10 seconds
Rest 40 seconds
Sprint full out for 10 seconds
Rest 50 seconds

The site Health Day, talks about a new antibody that researchers have found effective in monkeys. It helps with diabetes and weight loss by improving insulin sensitivity.

Quote from article:
“The results we describe in animal models are profound and very encouraging,” said study senior author Yang Li, scientific director at Amgen, Inc., in Thousand Oaks, Calif. “While we’re excited about these findings, we’re still evaluating the results.”
Li said it’s important to remember these findings were in monkeys and only in a preclinical setting. It’s not yet clear how this treatment might act in humans.
