They sever our physical connection to the earth, perturb our natural running and walking gait, and probably increase our risk of running injuries by increasing the forces acting on our joints when we land. That’s fairly basic stuff for readers of this blog, many of whom are intellectually on board with the barefoot thing and convinced of the benefits. And yet actually going barefoot is a big leap for most people. Something holds them back./p

First up is a question from Casey, whose father is losing strength and muscle despite maintaining an active lifestyle. What can he do — dietarily and otherwise — to staunch and reverse the losses? Next, Australian cattle farmers are increasingly turning to sprouted grain as a replacement for standard grain feed. How does it compare to pasture feeding? Are there nutritional differences between sprouted and regular grain fodder? And finally, what do we make of the recent study showing negative effects in cyclists who ate a high-pistachio diet for two weeks? Should we rethink our stance on pistachios — and a title=”The Definitive Guide to Nuts” href=”http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-definitive-guide-to-nuts/”nuts/a […]

I’m not sure where the harebrained idea to make my own marshmallow Peeps came from, but I’m sure glad it did. Yes, they are a lot of work. Yes, they involve gelatin (an ingredient I don’t often use). And yes, they are loaded with sugar and not much else. Oh, and yes, they are a tremendous amount of fun to make and eat! Happy Easter, my friends!

My family being what it is, a Sunday lunch means we have 17 people to feed (a very normal-sized gathering when you’re the oldest of eight kids!). I often decide to fall back on ham, that oh-so-easy lunch dish.

If you too have some large lunches and brunches in your near future, let me show you how to buy and bake a ham, and finish it with a honey-balsamic glaze. It’s as easy as 1-2-3, and so delicious, too.

Filing boxes used as wall-mounted bins for grocery bags, via Everyday Organizing

Right now there’s a cupboard in my kitchen stuffed with reusable grocery totes and paper bags. Periodically I try to straighten everything, but the area inevitably gets messy again, with bags falling out and on me whenever I open the door.

I’ve never found a great way to store bags, but this solution from Everyday Organizing, which uses plastic file boxes hung on the wall as grocery bag bins, gives me hope. Isn’t it clever?
