What do one badass app, co-working spaces, the Brooklyn Navy Yard and a new-age advertising agency have in common? One word, us, oh, and that they all are building empires around innovative new collective workspaces.
This Friday, I’m hosting a Maker Talk panel – Design & Co-Working Spaces: The Future of How We’ll Work – at Northside Festival in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The organizers gave us free rein on topic and we made sure to zero in on co-working spaces.

Ever wonder just how many calories are in that triple-dip ice cream cone you just documented on Instagram? Wonder no more — Google is working on technology to analyze photos to estimate the caloric value of the foods pictured. Sounds a little crazy, a little magic — and ultimately pretty awesome.

I would contend that strawberry shortcake is not only the best summer dessert, but also the best dessert for a summer party. Why? Well, beyond the obvious — juicy ripe berries, cool whipped cream, and tender biscuits are basically a love note in the form of dessert, complete with hearts dotting every “i” — all the components can be made well ahead of party time, and even packed up to go.
Here is a step-by-step recipe for simply the best strawberry shortcake you (and your guests) will eat all summer long.

There’s nothing wrong with the more popular lettuces, and arugula and romaine are often mainstays in my crisper drawer. But I encourage you to expand your lettuce horizons — there are so many other tasty greens out there to explore.
Make your salads more fun and interesting, and give these five greens that I’m loving right now a try!

Sorrel is forest green and grassy in color, but it is all yellow and citrus in taste. Wild or cultivated, this so-called weed has a wonderful, sharp lemony flavor (thanks to oxalic acid in its leaves). It is packed with nutrients, and has more assertive and bright character than you might find in more common greens.
If you aren’t cooking with sorrel, I strongly recommend you start.

Researchers have come up with formal recommendations for how much time we should spend sitting every day. The evidence-based recommendation is that Americans should begin to stand, move and take breaks for at least two out of eight hours at work.
Then, we should gradually work up to spending at least half of an eight-hour work day in what researchers call “light-intensity activities.” This includes simple non-sitting movement like standing and walking.
There are more than just health benefits associated with standing desks; these desks can potentially improve work performance. Teachers in Marin County are convinced their school’s new standing desks help kids be calmer and more attentive.
I personally find my ability to focus is significantly improved by using a treadmill desk. If you’re interested in learning how I’ve put mine together, check out my guide to building an affordable treadmill desk. If you can’t use a treadmill desk, I also describe a few options for a standing desk instead.
