Roundup

Blast from the Past

A new study has found that both calcium supplements and dairy products are not helpful for keeping bones healthy and strong. Ultimately, the researchers concluded that “dietary calcium intake is not associated with risk of fracture, and there is no clinical trial evidence that increasing calcium intake from dietary sources prevents fractures.”

And taking calcium supplements could actually be harmful: the extra calcium doesn’t go to strengthen bones but instead can build up in the arteries, causing heart disease, or in the kidneys, causing kidney stones. This is another example of a situation where conventional dietary guidelines have got it wrong, and may even be causing harm.

In 2013 I wrote an article about the potential dangers of calcium supplementation. And last year one of my staff nutritionists shared her recommendations for building strong bones without needing to consume dairy products. These two articles will give you all the information you need to start growing better bone density today; no dairy or calcium supplementation required.

Q: Does a Dutch oven take the place of a slow cooker? I already own a slow cooker that I love and am looking at purchasing a Dutch oven, but I’m not sure if it makes sense to have both. Also, can I do stove to oven with an old coil burner stove, as I’m in a rental?

Running is like breathing. Just because you do it doesn’t mean you do it well. For runners this boils down to our ongoing relationship with gravity. Here’s the thing – gravity will win if you fight it. Far better to learn how to use it for your next race.

In my previous article, I gave an overview of what feats of strength are and why you should do them. Now, in this article, we dive into the specifics of one of the more popular challenges – tearing a phonebook in half. We’ll discuss how to actually do it and how to train for it, too. Unfortunately, with smart phones and near universal access to the Internet, the phonebook is dying out. So be sure to practice this feat of strength before it is too late.
