Using orthoses is a great way to reinforce what the correct positions are, even when you’re not standing there making corrections.
It’s been said that the air squat is the “handshake of CrossFit.” Just as you can tell a lot about someone from their handshake, you can tell how carefully (or not) an athlete has been trained by the quality of his or her squat. All too often, the humble air squat hasn’t received the attention it deserves.
In my By the Numbers method of instruction, the squat is broken down into three poses, like so:
