This month we’ve been talking to cooks around the country about their favorite knives, and we’ve also asked them to share where and how they store them. As you might imagine, magnetic knife strips are a pretty popular solution, but these holders aren’t just for knives — they’re good for storing so much more, like bench scrapers and metal spatulas (see above).

Here are six ways you can use a magnetic knife rack around the kitchen.

Lean into fresh fig season while you can — it’s slow to arrive and quick to leave. If you’re lucky enough to live in a region where they are easy to come by, you likely already know this and are eating them by the handful. For the rest of us, where the arrival of figs means only displays of pints from California at the grocery store, we often don’t know the glories because frankly, those shipped containers just aren’t as good. But this recipe lets the rest of us play along, because it transforms even those subpar fresh figs into something wonderful.

Every school year starts optimistically. Sure, it’s hard to wake up earlier, but if you’re anything like me, the start of a new routine is energizing. I return to meal planning, relish fixed hours to get work done, and even devote myself to beautiful packed lunches — for the kids and myself — that will make us all thrilled to eat well, even in the middle of a busy day.

But after a few weeks (or, uh, maybe just two of them), I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the thought of doing this all year long. As in, 180 times.

Sound familiar? That’s when I reach for store-bought shortcuts to help, and you should too.

If I’ve learned one thing about making breakfast sandwiches over the years, it’s that it’s always necessary to have a creamy element to bring the whole thing together. You can skip the eggs or meat or even the cheese (yes, I do really mean it), but a light spread of something will make that sandwich better. Take your breakfast sandwich game to a whole new level with these ideas for creamy toppings.

20 Cooks, 20 Knives: This month, we’re taking a close look at a chef’s most important tool: her knife. We asked 20 cooks, amateurs and professionals, to share their favorite knives and the stories behind them. While chef’s knives are featured prominently, no two are exactly alike, and there are also a few surprises.

Caden Whitmore

Age: 4
City: Minneapolis

Caden enjoys cooking and always jumps at the chance to help in the kitchen. Last year he received a set of plastic children’s knives as a Christmas gift. They’ve proven to be very useful, allowing Caden to easily and safely help chop vegetables and prepare meals. Thankfully his knives came in a set of three, so he can share with his older sister and younger brothers, if needed.

Now that Labor Day has come and gone, and people are (gasp!) already starting to talk about oatmeal and Pumpkin Spice Lattes, I think it’s time to address a breakfast trend that has been all over Instagram and Pinterest during sunny, warm-weather months.

I’m just going to come right out and say it: Smoothie bowls are nothing but big fat lies.
