Dessert lasagna is the modern take on trifles. Cookies or cake are layered with pudding, mousse, or whipped cream (or in some cases, all three) in a 9×13-inch baking dish, giving it distinct layers like its savory counterpart. But dessert lasagna doesn’t require any cooking and actually gets better the longer it sits in the fridge.

Pumpkin dessert lasagna is an easy make-ahead dessert perfect for Thanksgiving. It has layers of gingersnap cookies, a spiced cream cheese mousse, and pumpkin pudding enrobed in a spiced whipped cream. The whole of it is drizzled with a quick caramel sauce so each bite is a magical mix of all the favorite flavors and textures of the holiday season.

Earlier this year, I attended a dinner that highlighted the wines of Bordeaux. But these wines weren’t the ones I expected to see; the serious and spendy reds I think of when I hear “Bordeaux.” Instead, they were affordable and approachable, the kind I’d want to serve for the holidays — or just drink on any given Tuesday night.

Curious to find out more, we invited Mary Gorman-McAdams, an advisor to the Bordeaux Wine Council (and former wine writer for Kitchn), and Patrick Cappiello, the wine director at New York’s Rebelle and Pearl & Ash, to come to our offices. We tried a bunch of wines, got a bit geeky about grapes, and learned a lot about the region.

The top tip I took away, though, was one I didn’t expect — and it has to do with understanding the wine label.

Six years ago I was sitting around with a bunch of my gal pals drinking wine and talking about our collective love for Thanksgiving. “Why don’t we all get together with our dudes and have a Thanksgiving together?” someone suggested. A Friendsgiving was born. At the first Friendsgiving there were construction-paper pilgrim hats. There was a long table in which we all sat and shared what we were Thankful for. There was turkey — and also a ham. (This was a result of a buy-a-turkey-get-a-free-ham deal at the grocery store that just couldn’t be passed up.) There were full bellies and fuller wine glasses. It was an epic celebration.

You too can make Thanksgiving potluck with friends a stress-free and fun-for-all event to live on social media for eternity. Here are my 10 commandments for a Friendsgiving to remember.

Thanksgiving is basically the Olympics of cooking. Between prepping the meal, cooking the meal, coordinating finishing times, breaking up family squabbles, and getting your home ready for company, you deserve a medal for getting through it. (Or at least a foot rub before bed.)

One of the hostess duties no one talks about is delegation. Inevitably, every guest will ask you at some point, “How can I help?” And because you’re running around like a crazy person, you probably won’t even have the cognitive function to come up with something for them to do.

Instead of blowing off these (likely) empty gestures, here are a few tasks you should have your guests take off your plate. Because, let’s face it, you don’t want to do them yourself.

If you’ve never been to Aldi, it might surprise you that it’s a great place to shop for Thanksgiving. I understand. Before I started shopping at Aldi, I imagined they sold subpar food; something akin to what you’d find at a supersized convenience store. How wrong I was.

Pinecones are one of the best fall decorations, and we’ve seen them every which way: painted, flocked, doused in glitter, rolled in peanut butter — you name it!

Now, we’re seeing them bleached. That’s right … bleached! Think of this pale, Scandinavian-inspired look as the sleek, modern take on this traditional autumn decor classic. And we’re kind of loving it.

The first step is to accept the reality: Thanksgiving is stressful. Some people will tell you it is not, or that you should just learn how to chill out, now and in general. And perhaps this is good life advice for us all. Let us aspire to it.

Until we all reach this higher plane, though, I would argue that being just a little on edge this time of year is more than justifiable. On Thanksgiving, you are outnumbered in your own home. Theoretically, you like these people, or at least you are bound to them by blood or obligation.

Still, though: They are invading your house.

While it might not be possible to ensure an entirely peaceful event, it is absolutely possible to take small, reasonable steps to maximize your own happiness and minimize the chances that you will blow up at your mother. These 10 little tips should help.
