I have my mom to thank for my habit of blanketing the bottom shelf of my pantry with a row of canned tomatoes. She never directly advised this purchase, never outwardly sung the praises of the incredible versatility that lies inside a 14-ounce can, and never declared them the key to all the dinners she made from them. But that might be what I like best about all of this. She didn’t have to tell me; her actions made this lesson clear.

A night for pizza and a night for leftovers are always on my meal plan, but there’s one other night that I always include in my meal plan. Sometimes I plan it for a specific night, or other times it is just in my back pocket as Plan B. Every meal plan needs at least one no-brainer meal that can be made quickly with basic ingredients. Mine is breakfast for dinner or, as I like to call it, “BFD.”

We never get over how magical baking is. You take all these raw ingredients and mix them together, and a few hours later you have something beautiful and delicious to share. If you find comfort in stirring a bowl of chocolate batter, or a sense of calm frosting a cake, you’re probably already aware of the fact that baking can make you feel better. We also think watching someone bake something beautiful can have the same effect. So here’s a video of someone frosting a pretty chocolate hazelnut cake.

We aren’t rushing through the act because maybe you’ll pick up a trick or two just by observing the process. And after you zen out watching the frosting glide across the sides of the cake, maybe you’ll want to bake this beauty yourself. The recipe is here for you to do just that.

Throughout January and February, six Kitchn editors tried out the Whole30 program for the first time. In case you’re not familiar, Whole30 is a program where you cut out added sugar, grains, alcohol, legumes, dairy, carrageenan, MSG, and sulfites for 30 days. The program is supposed to help you reset and refocus on food and figure out what makes you feel good.

A couple of our editors loved the program and completed the full 30 days and reintroduction, while other editors had major problems with the program and decided to quit midway. Whole30 is different for every person who does it, and everyone’s experience is valid.

Here’s what each editor has to say about their experience with Whole30.

I’ve been thinking a lot about water lately after a recent trip to Switzerland, where something like 80 percent of the water stems directly from natural springs and groundwater and lakes. Not only is it safe to drink from the tap, but it’s also actually considered healthier than the bottled water you’d buy in the store.

Perhaps it’s the abundance of really good water that makes the Swiss take their water seriously — so seriously that there are healing-water spas and water sommelier is a real job. In fact, the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, a sprawling health and wellness resort about an hour southeast of Zurich, has not one but two water sommeliers.

I’ll be honest: When I read water sommelier listed as one of the featured amenities, I thought the very same thing you’re probably thinking right now. A water sommelier? Really? Skeptical, but intrigued, I sat down with one of them, Irina Taculina, to find out more about what exactly a water sommelier does and what I should know about water.

We’re big proponents of making pizza night a regular occurrence in our weekly meal plan. Whether we’re going the homemade route or ordering from our favorite spot, it’s a meal that we always look forward to, especially when it falls on a Friday night.

But to truly make a pizza pie worthy of dinner, round out that meal with a light and hearty salad. From a lemony green salad with pepitas and radicchio, to a tomato-chickpea salad, you could go week after week trying something new. So before your next pizza night, add one of these fresh options to the meal plan. They’re on the easy side, so you’ll still feel like it’s a night off from the kitchen.

For years I was convinced I didn’t need a toaster. I thought I could just fry bread in some butter on the stovetop and it would be fine. I thought a toaster would be too big for my small Brooklyn kitchen. I thought toasters were just a silly, expensive item.

Well, dear reader, I was wrong.

I spotted this Smeg toaster at a kitchen appliance show a year or so ago and knew I needed to have it. Not only is it the most beautiful thing in my kitchen (sorry, Le Creuset Dutch oven), but it’s also completely functional and makes perfect toast in minutes. You can currently buy this on Amazon for $150. Yes, it’s not cheap. Not at all.
