In a sea of minimal, white Scandinavian-style kitchens on Pinterest, it’s easy to forget that kitchens can (and should) be fun. Not everything in your kitchen needs to be copper and marble, you know. Ready to shake things up a little? I have just the thing.

I’ve had my eye on these Loch Ness monster ladles for some time. I’ve seen them in countless product roundups, but I didn’t totally realize how affordable they were. On Amazon right now, you can get three of these adorable soup and punch ladles — they come in pink, blue, and green — for just $8.

Almost always! Because it’s fun! I mean, it can be. If appliance repair isn’t your idea of weekend entertainment, it may still be worth a try. Thanks to my need for a hobby, my appliances last even longer than expected. It’s simple: I refuse to give up on things that cost me a lot of money.

Of course, there are times when a repair is beyond my skill level. I’ve learned when to throw in the towel, or call the appliance repair person, as the case may be.

How do you know when you should go the DIY route for a large appliance that’s no longer under warranty? Ask yourself these simple questions.

This is how you turn those pears sitting on your counter into the best meal you’ll eat all week. With one pan and a bit of bacon and blue cheese, you’ll roast the pears until they’re buttery-soft and tender. This fast and fancy dinner is easy enough to pull together when you want to treat yourself on a weeknight (you can make just one or two pears) and impressive enough for a party (scaling to fill a platter doesn’t require more work — just more pears). Serve everything over a tangle of dressed arugula and dig in.

My meal plan for the coming week has an unintended theme: quick comfort-food classics. Or you might even say the theme is cozy kid-friendly favorites. All the heavy hitters are here: grilled cheese, fries, pasta, and pizza. It is inspired in part by the unusually cold weather we’ve been having in Atlanta, but mostly by my husband’s work schedule.

My husband, who is a freelancer, has a stretch of back-to-back gigs coming up so we’ll hardly see him over the next 10 days. This means I won’t have his help at dinner time. I’ll be juggling two preschoolers while I cook, fending off their demands for snacks. Doing family dinner solo makes me reach for fast, kid-friendly fare. I won’t have the stamina to encourage them to try something new at the table this week; I’d much rather enjoy my time with them at the table then argue over eating asparagus.

I’m sharing the five recipes that are going onto my family’s meal plan for the week ahead. This is what my kids and I will eat next week, with one Dad-requested dinner for the night he’ll be home in the mix. I added some tips on how I’ll shop and prepare for these meals and how I’m adapting them for my one picky eater.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! After you eat your corned beef, colcannon, and Irish soda bread, you’ll need a festive treat to end the night on a sweet note. And while there are plenty of awesome green-colored desserts out there, I’ve got my eye on these Irish coffee brownies.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, which means it is also a day when many pints of Guinness will be consumed. And when we say many, we mean roughly 13 million pints over the course of 24 hours. Clearly no excuse is needed to drink a pint of Guinness today of all days, but there are, in fact, many reasons to feel good about raising a glass of the dark-and-creamy stout in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland. Here are five.

How often do you clean your stovetop? Do you wipe up spills and splatters right away? Or do you, ahem, let it build up? And after you’ve got a crust of burnt gunk, how do you clean it up? Here’s a tip for those of us who, again, ahem, procrastinate on cleaning the stove. There’s a secret weapon we’ve found for getting it clean with no harsh chemicals and with a minimum of elbow grease.
