Carrot cake already has a charming earthiness to it. The warmth of cinnamon, the vegetal sweetness of carrots, and the pop of raisins (their particular sweetness fruity and mellow in their own right) — all come together to make a dessert easily enjoyed on many occasions. Bake up four towering layers, pipe on the cream cheese frosting with a pretty technique, and decorate with garden-fresh flowers, and suddenly that charming, earthy cake takes on an air of pure elegance. In this video, you’ll see just how the piping is done.

Popular throughout Latin America, tres leches is a buttery cake baked and then soaked in a combination of evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and whole milk, hence the “three milks” name. While milk-soaked cake might sound soggy, this cake is the perfect summertime cake, thanks to its cool serving temperature. The cake acts as a sponge for the milk mixture and takes on a rich pudding-like texture after the milks are added. Served cold straight from the pan, tres leches cake tastes much like a rich vanilla ice cream with a pudding-meets-cake texture.
Tres leches cake often starts with a sponge cake, but here we use the magic of our one-bowl cake to make this classic dessert even easier to bake and make.

As many variations of potato salad as there are out there, it’s hard to beat the classic combination of smoky bacon and tender potatoes. In this tangy German-inspired potato salad, there’s bacon-y goodness infused into every single bite. For all you bacon-lovers out there, this recipe should be at the top of your list the next time a side of potato salad is needed to go next to some fried chicken, burgers, hot dogs, or barbecued ribs.

I am a big believer in cookies of all shapes, sizes, and flavors. But ugly cookies (which are sometimes the tastiest cookies) aren’t right for every occasion. If your spring season is scheduled with gatherings that require sweet treats that are as festive and pretty as they are delicious, these cookies definitely fit the bill. You don’t need a special occasion on the calendar to bake them, though — in my opinion, the warm, balmy days of spring are reason enough to celebrate with cookies.

The meaty bite and fatty flavor of flank steak is pretty irresistible all on its own, but add bourbon cream sauce and this simple weeknight meal takes a turn for something far fancier. This quick-cooking sauce, swirled with smoky, sweet bourbon, a splash of stock, and some cream, is a luxe combo that takes your basic pan sauce to a new level — and your steak, too! Best of all, the sauce comes together with just three ingredients.

Maybe your apartment is too small for even a tiny breakfast table, or maybe you just want to unwind with some takeout, some quality television, and as little conversation as possible?
Whatever your reason for sitting on the couch while eating dinner, I can not judge you (I do it all the time!), but I can offer you some ideas for how to make the meal feel a little more special.

Poke cakes go back to the ancient days of the 1970s, the heyday of boxed cake mixes, Jell-O, and Cool Whip. Colorful and easy to make, poke cakes are the white patent leather go-go boots of the bakery case — kitschy and dated, but still a heck of a lot of fun.
