One might argue that airplane food has made some major strides in the past decade. These improvements are mostly in first class, where partnerships with famous chefs have meant meals and wine that you can actually stomach, but let’s not forget that fact that you can now get a semi-decent wrap or a box of totally acceptable snacks. Yes, you will probably have to pay for those mediocre offerings, but one could make the case that, even so, it is better than the sad chicken casseroles of yesteryear.

Still, despite such potential arguments and case-making, I would say that airlines have, for the most part, completely missed the mark when it comes to food.

While popcorn is usually relegated to mid-afternoon snack territory, it also makes for one of the fastest, fanciest cocktail bites around. It’s unexpected — people associate it with 3 p.m. hunger pangs rather than something washed down with wine — and it’s infinitely and deliciously adaptable.

My current go-to is inspired by one of my favorite pasta dishes: cacio e pepe. Sharp, salty Pecorino Romano cheese and biting black pepper join forces in an irresistible combination that lately has been seen in a whole lot of recipes beyond a bowl of spaghetti. Now popcorn is taking the combination for a spin and we’ve got the ideal bottle of wine to go with it.

Chris, I appreciate your sensible, scientific input. You are a breath of fresh air. I can always count on you to give me solid information, not based on the latest fad, and not a repeat of what everyone else is spouting as “fact.” Thank you!

fwiw, I drink a cup of coffee (with heavy whipping cream) at 6am and don’t eat (oatmeal with apple, or egg and toasted homemade bread, or toast with peanut butter and raisins) until 9am or 10am. Sometimes I walk a mile before or after eating. I feel much better that way. Thanks again.

Traveling can be tough if you’re gluten-free. Even still, in 2017. Your travel buddy might be able to grab a doughnut and call it an afternoon treat, but you? Not so much. And while there are plenty of gluten-free snacks to choose from, they’re generally either (1) not that tasty, (2) super expensive, or (3) both.

Luckily, there are some exceptions to the rule. Here are 10 delicious and highly portable snacks that you can pack with you and eat throughout your next trip.
