Over 170 countries are currently promoting support for breastfeeding as the world marks breastfeeding week, starting today. We get excited about a lot of fresh summer produce, but if there was just one single item to get really excited for, it’s Hatch green chiles. They’re starting to arrive right now and will continue into October, but don’t wait too long to pick some up because they’re only in season for a short time. We’re making the most of them while we can — starting with breakfast.

Can you recycle aluminum foil? The short answer is yes; the long answer is maybe. The biggest barrier to recycling aluminum foil is not what it’s made of — because the material itself is 100 percent recyclable — it’s that your foil is usually covered in food.

Historically, recycling processing centers have not been able to recycle products mixed with organic material (read: caked-on lasagna, oil splatters, and cupcake icing) because it would be too cost-intensive to clean stuff off before starting the recycling process. So for a long time you weren’t allowed to put your foil in with your aluminum cans, even though it’s made of the same thing and just as recyclable.

But there’s new news! As we’ve all become more interested in living greener, recycling processes have evolved to the point where many recycling facilities are taking used aluminum foil in your regular curbside recycling bin!

At Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery, the Seattle shop famous for deceivingly small chocolate cakes baked to order, it’s easy to be sidetracked by the main event. When you’re waiting in line — because yes, you’ll probably have to wait — the scent of chocolate hovers overhead like a heavy cloud. It’s easy to imagine that at any moment, the cloud will burst and Seattle’s rain will turn into hot, thick chocolate. But curb your imagination: You need to focus not just on the cakes, but also on the milkshakes, which come both straight-up and laced with (usually local) booze. Our favorite, the “Extra Dark Caramel and Rye” shake, is made with the rye caramel they make in house.

I love quick breads because they usually don’t require an electric mixer — a little elbow grease and a rubber spatula is enough to whip them up. But they’re usually on the sweet side, with banana or pumpkin bread being the most common varieties. It turns out quick breads are also a great base for savory flavors, too. This one is seasoned with all the flavors of a fresh homemade ranch dressing and made with under-appreciated cottage cheese for the best overall texture.

There are two schools of thought as to what makes the perfect summer tomato salad. There’s the minimalist approach, as seen in this lovely recipe, letting ripe tomatoes stand on their own with nothing more than a touch of oil and balsamic. This is very good indeed, but there is another approach that is just as good.

This is the full-on maximalist tomato salad: tossed gloriously with red pepper, feta, dill, cucumber, and olives. Both are beautiful, both are delicious, but we’re going maximal today.

The best part about being pregnant is the fantasies you have before the baby comes. Nothing x-rated here — it’s all about brunching with your snoozing baby, the beauty and ease of naturally breastfeeding, finally fitting back into your pre-pregnancy clothes, and having that unicorn baby who magically figures out how to sleep through the night at six weeks old.

There’s a reason they’re called fantasies and there’s a reason they end the first night the baby is home with you. Sure, maybe you are lucky enough to have one or two of those fantasies come through, but most of them aren’t realistic. The expectations for you, your family, and especially the tiny human who just entered the world can just be a little too high. That’s where most of my mistakes in the kitchen came from — those crazy-high expectations. Here are the five biggest mistakes I made, so hopefully you can avoid them.
