I grew up going skiing in upstate New York. It was, let me be completely honest, unextraordinary in every single way — especially the food. I remember being very hungry.

Fast forward a few decades and (much to my surprise) upstate New York has completely transformed. Towns revitalized, hotels and motels restored to their former glory, and a slew of new restaurants, bars, and shops opened. This is thanks largely to artists and artisans who have flocked to the region, attracted to the landscape, like-minded people, and room to build and grow.

My son is five years old, and though he’s only been on this planet a short time, he’s already done a bit of traveling. We’ve taken numerous long car trips since he was about two years old, and one plane trip so far from the midwestern U.S. where we live to Ontario, Canada. I would […]

When I want to find some next-level meal-planning inspiration on Instagram, I don’t dive into fitness feeds or the #mealprep hashtag. And I don’t look for the glossy, perfectly photographed food feeds where you wonder if anyone actually eats the meticulous dish you’re drooling over. I look for chefs churning out a week’s worth of meals with passion, grit, and a Costco membership.

I look for sorority chefs.

Dry ice can help create a spooky effect at your next Halloween party, but if it isn’t properly stored, it will dissipate into a fog before you actually need it to. Dry ice is the frozen form of carbon dioxide, which is why, instead of melting into a liquid when heated, it instead turns into a gas. Because it’s so cold (an extra-frigid -109.3°F, to be exact), it sublimates into a gas rather quickly.

So if you go to the trouble of obtaining dry ice for Halloween, here are a couple tips to follow that will ensure it stays frozen until you need it to billow spooky fog long into the night.

Weeknight standards like chili, tacos, and sloppy Joes all start with the same basic concept: browning ground beef in a bit of oil. Some recipes may call for adding onion, garlic, or spices at some point along the journey, but getting truly browned ground beef is the best thing you can do to build flavor in the final dish.

Properly browning ground meat for the start of a dinner recipe or for storing in the fridge for meals all week isn’t hard, but here’s a refresher for when you need it.
