Making Martha Stewart’s mac and cheese instead of the mac and cheese I grew up eating at Thanksgiving isn’t something I’d do if I was home for the holidays. My brothers would sulk, my mom would be forlorn about it, and I’m not quite sure my dad would notice. It’s taken me years to understand that being an introvert isn’t a bad thing. (After all, J.K. Rowling, Bill Gates, and Barack Obama are pretty good company to keep.) Introverts aren’t misanthropes. If you’ve ever leafed through one of Alice Waters’ cookbooks or been lucky enough to eat a meal at Chez Panisse, then you know why Waters is often labeled as the queen of Californian — if not American — cooking. The way she handles food feels like magic, and now you have the opportunity to learn from her in a totally new way.

Thanksgiving is a heavy meal. There’s a sea of carbs (which we love) and desserts (which we double love) to enjoy on the big day. But the salad is your place to play and get creative. Who cares about the salad on Thanksgiving, you may ask. If you do it right, it will be a highlight of the meal — a colorful respite between the mounds of mashed potatoes and stuffing.

As a competitor, coming off of competition comes with a mix of emotions. It could be regret for not competing or preparing as well as you could have, it could be pride for performing well, it could be gratitude for the people who helped you get to where you did, or it could be all of those things and none of them at the same time.

The top one or two shelves in any pantry are always tricky to navigate — no matter how large or small the space happens to be. You know how it goes: You jam stuff up there and then promptly forget about it because it’s too hard to reach or you’re worried about the Jenga-like effect that could happen if you were to try to get something down.

Fortunately, some small changes can make the difference between those top shelves being wasted space versus becoming a storage space that really works for you. Here are a few good tricks.

Butter connoisseurs speak in whispers about Diane St. Clair, the maker of arguably the best butter in America. She lives in Vermont, and the butter she produces there is said to top even butters from Normandy and Ireland. It’s rich and creamy, and it’s virtually impossible to get your hands on unless your name is Thomas Keller. Now her world-renowned, handcrafted butter will be available for sale for one day only, and it’s expected to sell out in no time. It costs $50 a pound, but devotees say it’s more than worth it.
