You eat at a decent hour before 6 p.m., turn off all electronic devices, shut off the lights and force yourself to go to sleep on time — and yet you still wake up with zero energy. Sound familiar? Feeling tired can loom over you like an ominous dark cloud of despair. Once your body […]

Think about your fitness routine. How do you structure the schedule, goals, and logistics? Next, consider how closely your routine matches the following scenario: You go to your training facility of choice (HIIT, CrossFit, yoga, studio fitness, etc.) three days per week, spaced at an even interval and always at the same time of day. Let’s say Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 6:00 PM, right after work. You do the same style of class, with approximately the same individuals and the same coach/trainer/instructor. You have a special set of clothes and shoes for this endeavor.

The outermost portion of our skin is generally made of 10 to 30 dead layers. Mine’s at about -5 at the moment, because just before I sat down to write this piece, a Korean spa Jedi took a scouring pad to my body and proceeded to power-scrub as though possessed by the Force. She then doused me with warm milk, slathered me in puréed cucumber, and sent me home a new woman. Or at least one with unrecognizably silky, glowing skin.

Although not all Korean skincare (or K-beauty, as it’s popularly known) is so extreme, it often shares two things with my evening’s adventure: visible results and foodie roots. Or actually, some combination thereof. One of the highest compliments — indeed, one of the most sought-after results — within this esthetic ecosystem is “honey skin.”

Too much fructose in too short a time (glass of juice, can of soda) overwhelms the gut’s ability to handle it, especially on an empty stomach. Eating it after meals helps.

Science journals with the most prestige are often the least reliable.

Once again, very low carb diets are great for Type 2 diabetes (PDF).

A Primal keto diet is just fine for magnesium levels.

Run to beat stress.

Interesting Blog Posts

Man, desperate to fix his chronic pain, tries jumping into 52° F water for a quick swim. It works.

Why are our teeth so often crooked?

Neanderthals were doing cave art at least 60,000 years ago, just like us.

Maybe don’t go barefoot in San Francisco.

Everything Else

Pandas are beautiful creatures, but man have they been dealt a terrible hand. Despite eating their 99% bamboo diet for thousands of generations, their guts still aren’t designed for fiber fermentation.

Even the wild animals are less free to roam.

Things I’m Up to and Interested In

I’ve always wanted to work a The Graduate reference into the blog: “‘I want to say one word to you. Just one word. Plastics. There’s a great future in plastics if you want to increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension in middle aged and older men.”

I wish they’d figure this out: Cell phone use may still be a problem. Despite recent studies, it’s unclear whether it is or isn’t.

I disagree: “Yoga pants are bad for women.”

I’m laughing because it’s true: “Smells a Bit Like Eggs.”

I’d rave to this: David Attenborough’s voice.

Also, how much sulfuraphane did Dana Carvey create on SNL by singing about chopping broccoli?

Like most books, cookbooks are hard to part with. They can carry the sentimental weight of recipes you’ve loved, or dreams of the sort of cook you hoped to become, or the disappointment of diets failed, or meals that turned disastrous. But the reality is that most of us have only so much storage space for cookbooks, and at some point you may have to pare down.

The key is to assess where you are now, where that cookbook fits into your life, and whether it’s worth holding on to or if you’d be better off clearing the space (physical and mental) for something else. Here are five signs it’s time to get rid of a cookbook.

Several years ago, we spent time with friends in their Italian country house. (Yes, this was easily the best summer ever.) My friends are generous and lovely people, so there was always a full house, and we did a lot of cooking, which required a lot of food. The house was isolated, and my family learned to be even more mindful of food waste and extra trash. The grocery store was quite a drive and excess trash resulted in fines for our gracious hosts. We cooked everything we had on hand, eliminated as much packaging as possible, recycled everything we could, and sent the kids out to the compost pile after almost every meal.

While I’ve never been one to waste, that summer we took it to a whole new level, and I was happy to raise the bar on how we handled food waste. Here’s how we brought those practices home with us.

Making a cake is a commitment, especially if you’re making it to celebrate something, like a good friend’s birthday. It’s not like whipping up a weeknight dinner. If the cake doesn’t taste good, or if it’s more complicated than you initially anticipated, then you can’t just order pizza and call it a day. (I mean, there’s always your local bakeshop, but what if they’re closed that day?)

It’s easy to see why the most poplar cake recipe on Pinterest is, well, so popular. The caramel cake from Tastes Better from Scratch has been saved 249,000 times on Pinterest. It’s not too fussy, easily adaptable, and, most importantly of all, sounds delicious.
