If you’re making a list of things that are LITERALLY THE WORST, the top three have to be some combination of accidentally getting your sleeve wet when you wash your hands, being forced to leave a voicemail for someone (or the horror of realizing that someone has left a voicemail for you), and sad, thin chili.

Buying fresh spices, measuring, and mixing them makes even the speediest meals taste better. Chili spice mix is a good example of what making your own spice mix can do you for you. Its ingredients are few — six, if you like to keep score — and at least half of them are probably in your spice cabinet already. It makes a near perfect pot of chili, but can just as readily spice up a pot of black beans or a pan of roasted sweet potato cubes. Here’s what you need for chili spice mix at home.

If I could be anybody at 70 years old, I would want to be Ina Garten. Actually, scratch that, I’d want to be her at any age. I want her Hamptons house and her $15,000 French stove, and I want to smile all the time and look 25 years younger than I am — just like she does. The last part I’m still optimistic for, but the Hamptons house and the shiny oven are things I might just have to be content with by watching Ina on TV. Ina Garten has beautiful things, but a person doesn’t need Ina Garten-level cookware to make food like she does. A few quality pieces will do it for most of us.

Trader Joe’s is a magical, cutesy wonderland full of great products that are really good at making people say, “I’ve never had that before, but now that I see it, I absolutely must try it.” Last time I was there, I went in for Brussels sprouts and left with camel milk soap, lavender dryer sachets, and four different kinds of dried fruit.
People really, really love Trader Joe’s products, and nobody knows Trader Joe’s products as well as the people who work there.
