In the U.S. alone, one in 10 people were suffering from diabetes in the year 2015, whereas prediabetics constituted roughly one quarter of the nation’s entire population aged 18 and older.1 Such worrisome statistics reveal to us that certain illnesses, like diabetes or cardiovascular problems, are not only the result of diet choices, but a variety of lifestyle choices. Genetics also play a role and, in certain instances, may even be the sole cause of a diabetes diagnosis.

Let me guess — when chili is on the docket, you blindly reach for a can of diced tomatoes and the jar of red chili powder. I’m no different, but this time around we’re going to shake things up with a vibrant chili verde from the slow cooker. Fill your shopping basket with tomatillos, jalapeños, poblanos, cilantro, and oregano, and set aside the ground beef to reach for a pork shoulder instead. With a chili this pleasantly spicy and surprisingly fresh, you will be thankful to have a new take on a weekly favorite.

I have a recurring fantasy that one day, right after the apocalypse happens, I’ll find myself living next to the ocean right outside of Los Angeles (now destroyed) and I’ll meditate every day for one hour, and have a writing nook in my giant house that faces the water, and I’ll make my own green juices, and only wear pastel-colored mumus. My only friends in this scenario will be cats, all of which look like some variation of my favorite Instagram cat, Smoothie.

This is the universe that I would somehow magically be able to eat from the $200 tub of CAP Beauty’s coconut butter every single day. Or so I used to think.

Most olive oil dispensers are actually not ideal for olive oil storage, as they expose the oil to two of its natural enemies: light and oxygen. Tall glass dispensers (the most iconic ones) allow plenty of both in. And if you’re keeping the olive oil dispenser by the stove, you’re likely exposing it to its third enemy: heat.

If you do want to store olive oil in a more convenient dispenser (instead of the large container you may buy it in) we recommend a ceramic vessel, like this one from World Market, stored away from the stove. That’s not to say a glass dispenser like the one above doesn’t have a place in the kitchen. It certainly does!

So, by now you’ve tried no-knead bread and no-knead bread in a hurry, a slightly quicker variety, and you’ve seen how easy it is to bake bread at home. The no-knead phenomenon is still going incredibly strong, and we think it’s because it’s taught so many people how easy bread really is!

You can play with bread basics and yeast to suit almost any schedule. The one thing you usually need in making bread, though, is time. No-knead bread is delicious partly because of the very long rise. But what if you have a craving for last-minute yeasty goodness? What if you are making dinner and have only an hour or so, and biscuits just won’t do? Introducing no-time bread. It’s what you’ve been looking for.

You guys, I had no idea my mom was such a Costco fanatic. All I did was mention that I was thinking of getting a Costco membership, but wasn’t sure all the bulk purchasing made sense for my small household of two. It was the kind of random, off-hand comment one makes to one’s mother on the weekly Sunday afternoon phone chat. But in response, I received a lecture on financial planning and budget shopping — the likes of which I hadn’t heard since I left for college.

And so it came to pass that on a recent trip back home to Minnesota, my mother and I filled the trunk of her car with cloth grocery bags and hit up the local Costco. I was about to see my mom’s smart shopping in action.
