On the spectrum of picky eaters, I was the pickiest of picky pickers as a child. You’re talking to someone who used to refuse to eat the ends of hot dogs, hated the skins on apples, and basically survived entirely on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

My mom tried all the things to get me to eat (her methods are worth a post of their own) and is now very surprised that not only do I work in food media, but I also always order the chicken liver and I’m willing to try anything at least once.

I’m a grown-up now (when did that happen?) and have a very different palate than the one 10-year-old me had. I’m a much better eater and even opt for salads several times a week. The old (young) me? She’d only eat salads if there was this one thing on top.

If you opt to filter your water at home (rather than buy it bottled), I commend you! It’s less expensive for you and better for our planet to filter the stuff that comes from your tap.

Whether you already have a system and have been wondering how effective it really is or you’re just starting to dip your toes in the water pitcher world, the number of options on the market can be overwhelming. How can you pick the best filter?

I asked a scientist — and former coworker — what she uses at home. If you’re concerned about your water, I suggest following her lead.

Let’s be real: Tuesdays are rough. Mondays at least have the excitement of a new week, and by Wednesdays, the weekend is in sight again. Tuesdays are just the useless day in between. Which may explain why Taco Tuesday is such a hallowed tradition — something fun on the worst day of the week. Of course, the fact that it’s a weekly excuse to eat tacos could explain a lot, too.

While you don’t need a lot to observe Taco Tuesdays (besides, of course, tacos), that doesn’t mean you can’t covet a few fun kitchen buys to make it even better. Here are three Amazon finds that will totally upgrade the best food-themed night of the week.

Anytime I pick up a whole chicken from the grocery store, my first instinct is always to roast it. It feels like the default, right? The thing is, there are a ton of other ways to prepare a whole chicken than roasting. Here are my favorites.

Watching Ina Garten on TV makes it look like a lot of fun to be Ina Garten, but it really looks like a lot of fun to live next door to Ina Garten. She is constantly entertaining. Watching her show, one gets the distinct impression that she throws a party every time someone comes through her front door. She seems like she’d arrange a quickie welcome luncheon if a squirrel entered her yard, and every person who jogs past her house gets a cosmo and a lobster roll.

When we’re looking for a healthy, high-protein, portable snack we can toss in a lunch box or a gym bag, a lot of us look to string cheese. Kids love it. Adults love it. It’s mozzarella, after all.

The funny thing is, there are tons of string cheese brands on the market, all selling a product that looks exactly same as the rest: a cylinder of pale white cheese in a pull-apart plastic wrapper. Take any one of them home and it’ll taste like, you know, string cheese. Aside from the price and the label, however, there are a few key differences. Some have more or less flavor and some are more or less stringy, for example.

When your silverware drawer is less than eight inches wide, it’s easy to give up hope. Here’s how it happens: You excitedly buy one utensil organizer, get it home, and realize it doesn’t fit. You measure again and go back to the store to exchange the item, only to learn that there are no ready-made organizers that are small enough to fit.

You consider buying three of the narrowest baskets (one each for forks, spoons, and knives) but there’s only room for two and that’s weird. You decide to try one of those fully customizable assembly-required kits. You get home and realize the kit is a piece of junk and that none of the pieces fit together. You return it, give up hope, and resign yourself to a life of jumbled spoons, forks, and butter knives.

See how quickly that all went downhill?

As much as I love burritos and tacos, the thought of cooking and arranging all the elements separately — meat, rice, beans, and toppings — is sometimes more than I want to attempt on a busy weeknight. Not to mention the sheer number of dishes to tackle after the meal!

These burrito bowls have tender spiced rice, beans, corn, and BBQ-flavored chicken, all cooked together in a Dutch oven on top of the stove in just about 30 minutes.
