We recently moved our family from an apartment to a house. With a yard! And a deck! And a place for a grill! A grill, as you probably know, is a big purchase. A good-sized grill can cost a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. So we asked around and eventually settled on getting the same one my husband’s parents have — hey, it works great for them! (In case you’re wondering, it’s the Weber Spirit E-310.)

While it seemed pretty pricey to us ($449!), we knew that we’d be using it all the time. And then we put just a little more money into the deal, and it was the smartest thing we did: We paid for the grill to be assembled and delivered.

This month we’re looking at the way our mothers fed us. We interviewed five women about how their body image was formed or affected by their own mother, and how their approach to food has (or hasn’t) changed over the years.

If you’ve been reading food blogs for some time now, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with Molly Wizenberg, writer behind the award-winning site Orangette and co-owner of the Seattle-based restaurant Delancey. Today we’re talking with her about how she feels in her own body after giving birth, and what it was like growing up with a mother in the era of low-fat foods.

Before the Victoria sponge, British sponge cakes were leavened only by eggs hand-whisked with sugar until foamy and thick. Sometime in the mid-1800s, an unheralded genius realized that the recent invention of baking powder meant butter could be creamed in with the sugar, resulting in a firmer, longer-lasting, less temperamental sponge.

And that’s how we ended up with cake we know today: a toothsome, bouncy sponge that is comparatively easy to whip up and has a rich, buttery flavor. And Queen Victoria, an afternoon tea aficionado, was apparently particularly fond of it.

It’s interesting to notice that the promoters of Roundup always say that glysophate is not toxic. Not that Roundup is not toxic, but that glysophate is not toxic. I’ve read somewhere (that i forget) that glysophate itself is pretty weak and ineffectual as a herbicide; glysophate alone is probably non-toxic. If you sprayed just glysophate on your lawn, you might see little to no effect. Roundup, on the other hand, is a concoction of many adjuvants to glysophate that disrupt cell walls so that glysophate can enter the cell and kill the vegetation. Always check to see if the person is defending glysophate by itself, or Roundup, the entire concoction. If they’re just defending glysophate they might be trying to confuse the issue.

– I’ve noticed the same thing, Eric.

There are basic chicken recipes we all keep in our meal plan rotation — and then there are the chicken recipes that make you feel like a dinner genius. These 17 recipes are the latter.

They come together with minimal effort, yet deliver sophisticated flavor and sometimes an unexpected ingredient that makes your midweek meal feel pretty fancy (think: figs and balsamic glazed chicken, Arnold Palmer chicken thighs, or a vibrant coconut curry soup).

Memorial Day is just over two weeks away, which means summer really is truly almost here. And, right on cue, Chip and Joanna Gaines have dropped more products as part of their Hearth & Hand collection with Target.

We were so excited at the sneak peak we got last week that we already wrote about our top pick. Whether you agreed with us on that or not, there’s a lot in this new line that can seriously up your picnic game.

We have a family cottage, and it is definitely our little slice of heaven. Surrounded by lush trees, it’s not uncommon to see bears, deer or even wolves crossing the ice in the winter. With all of this wildlife around us, you bet that we find a mouse or two indoors each year.   Mice […]

Every once in a while, our daily diet gets a little wayward. We have one too many dinners out or too many cheese plates for dinner and we need to do a hard reset on what we’ve been eating and get more vegetables on our plates.

For my family of four, that means a focus on proteins, vegetables, and whole grains, but it certainly doesn’t mean that there isn’t a little pasta or our regular pizza night. Here are the five healthy meals I’m cooking for my family this week.

To get there we tend to push ourselves but it’s also important to rest to regenerate. I really love hosting parties — big or small — and search for any excuse to do so, but grocery shopping for them can be a challenge. After a few successes and plenty of failures, I’ve learned that tackling a big shopping list for a party is way different than your weekly grocery run.

Here are five mistakes to avoid the next time you’re shopping for a party — and how to make sure you’re set up for success (and fun!).
