inline mda_email01_header (1)Good morning, everybody. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend. Today we’re back in the saddle, and I’m getting in touch to ask a favor….

Specifically, I’m asking you to tell me a bit about yourself—where you are in your health journey, what challenges you, and what brings you (and keeps you coming back) to Mark’s Daily Apple. I’d like to use your feedback in this brief survey to help push MDA into new territory—to make a resource that better engages you and supports your interests.

Will you take just a few minutes with me today?

Over the years you’ve gotten to know me here on the blog, and I’ve loved meeting many of you through events like PrimalCon, Paleo f(x), and Primal Health Coach gatherings—or through your emails and letters. I’ve enjoyed answering as many of your questions as I can here and continuing the dialogue with you on the comment board as well as in our Facebook group and on our Instagram page. All of the success stories and progress photos you’ve sent over the years are truly inspiring and keep me doing what I do—so keep them coming!

For those of you who may be new to our community — first, welcome — or those who may have been less outspoken in comments, we’d love to hear more from you. Even if you feel like you’ve shared a lot about yourself over the years, I encourage you to take the survey as well. My hope is that this reader survey my staff and I have created will tell me more about what you want to read, what you find difficult, and why YOU do what you do.

And as a thank you for your time, you’ll receive a coupon for $10 off any purchase of $50 or more in our Primal Blueprint store.

Will you share your story with us? Complete the survey HERE.

Thanks for being here, and I’m grateful for your help today. Grok on, everybody.

Best,

Mark Sisson

When people talk about rental (or very basic) kitchens, there’s one thing they love to complain about the most: the absence of the oh-so-covetable dishwasher. And while I do think it’d be nice to have a machine that’ll clean my dirty plates for me (especially when I’m washing the 12th water glass and only two people live in my apartment), there’s one thing I’d actually rather have, if I were to find myself in an either-or scenario.

The answer: the humble and way-underrated garbage disposal.

It has been 26 years since the final episode of The Golden Girls aired on NBC, a two-parter that ended with Dorothy saying her goodbyes after her wedding to Blanche’s Uncle Lucas. (Yeah, it was a complicated finale.) “I mean, what can you say about seven years of fights and laughter … secrets … cheesecake,” Rose says just before all four Girls hug in front of the wicker furniture one last time.

Nestled at the base of the mountains in Boulder, Colorado, sits the first Lucky’s Market, a small grocery chain founded in 2003 by husband and wife team Trish and Bo Sharon.

Until recently, the store was a local’s secret. It was really only revered in the Rocky Mountain region, where a smattering of stores were quietly gaining loyal consumers. But the secret’s out. Now with store locations in many areas of the United States (and more coming soon!), chances are that you may have the opportunity to experience the magic of Lucky’s market too.

Here’s why Lucky’s market is simply the greatest.

When you’re on the road with the family, the last thing you want is a car filled with hungry kids. The familiar cajoles of road trip games and playful conversation can quickly turn sour if the children in the backseat go unfed. But what are you going to feed them?

We all remember our first time … shopping at Costco. If you’ve just decided to join the club, which has more than 88 million members, you’re going to want to make sure your first trip is the best it can possibly be. You’ll want to get good stuff, and make sure you set yourself up for success down the line.

Here are the first five things I think all new members should buy.

Note: For you readers who’ve been members for a while now, I’d be curious to hear how many of these things you got on your first trip — and what else you got.

I’ve always considered myself a brownie purist. A good brownie is rich and chocolatey, gooey and cakey at the same time — like some sort of magic. Why ruin that beautiful balance by tossing in a handful of random mix-ins? But famed London chef and cookbook author Yotam Ottolenghi convinced me to add halva chips and tahini to brownies, and the result is divine.

Summertime cooking is stripped down, casual, and always from the grill. These easy grilled chicken breasts are a summer stunner. They’re cooked roaring fast over the flames of the grill and flavored with tart lime and the fiery heat of jalapeños.

While burgers, brats, and barbecue are cookout classics, these punchy, spicy breasts of juicy chicken just might knock those picnic standards off their pedestal.

While it’s tempting to eat fresh produce straight out of the grocery bag, please don’t! Commercial produce sanitation is up to speed, but most of our own produce-handling practices are not: That piece of fruit has likely been touched by many hands before it got into your cart — unwashed hands, like those of my young children. For that, I apologize (and suggest you wash your fruits and vegetables before eating them).

While store-bought veggie washes have not been proven to be as effective as we’d like them to be, you might not be comfortable just running your produce under cold water, per the FDA’s recommendations. If that’s the case, consider making your own fruit and veggie wash to loosen debris, remove pesticides, and eliminate some of the bacteria that other grocery shoppers passed on to your produce.
