Mondays, right? Not today. Well, today technically is Monday, but it’s also the launch day of IKEA’s new 2019 catalog — so the day isn’t all bad.

“This year, we wanted to celebrate how differently we all live,” the catalog explains. “To do that, we created seven homes each with its own story to tell. From a 52-square-foot apartment to a home totally dedicated to eco-friendly choices, they can inspire a better everyday life at home, no matter how you live.”

In addition, the catalog promises lots of new products and fresh ideas. And we’ll cover lots of that later today (keep checking back!). In the meantime, there’s one thing we just had to call out.

These saucy, spiced chickpea bowls are all the proof you need that comfort food can also be healthy. Chickpeas are braised in a tomato sauce spiced with a medley of cumin, paprika, and cinnamon, and accented with harissa, a North African chile paste that’s both smoky and spicy. A little can go a long way, so if you prefer something a little more mild, use about half the amount of harissa called for in the recipe. The bowl is balanced with a pile of sautéed kale and a cool, minty yogurt sauce.

A rule of thumb when cooking with wine is to only use wine that you would drink on its own — which is why I am pouring myself a tall glass of Pinot Grigio while I make this chicken pasta with creamy white wine Parmesan sauce tonight.

The mystic wonders of coconut oil are vast and plenty. Here at The Alternative Daily, we love it for everything from its ability to boost the body’s metabolism and help ward off early signs of Alzheimer’s — and we’re not the only ones. In 2017 alone, the U.S. domestic consumption of coconut oil amounted to […]

The barbell shrug is a very misunderstood movement, a commonly passed over exercise, and often an incorrectly executed one.

As a primitive or primal movement, the shrug is as commonplace as flexing your hand to coerce someone to hurry up. Second nature to us, this movement works some finer muscles of the back and the shoulder girdle. Specifically, the levator scapula, serratus anterior, rhomboids, and latissimus dorsi.

The squat is often referred to as “the king of the gym lifts”—for good reason, too. A correctly performed barbell squat utilizes virtually every muscle in the body.1 If you want to get stronger, squats will help. If you want to get bigger, squats will help. If you want to lose weight, squats will help. As such, most good programs will include the squat.

Comment of the Week

“Though I changed my mind; how ’bout Metabolistopheles?

‘Ah! Now I’ve done the sigmoidoscopy,
All is settled; fiber bulk reigns my entrails.
Yet no leaner than before I stand — nay, tread,
Over insulin’s winding curves and opaque trails.
My crawling underbelly, quenched only by bread,
Fiddles to the tune of my fat’s scarcity swerves.
Or a mocking allele expressed by ravaged chemistry,
Tangled in miserable knots, escapes my bosoms:
Falling down towards Earth by the shortest path.’”

– I love it, Stefan.
