Imagine you knew exactly what you’d be eating for every single meal every single day of the week. Now, will that fantasy into existence by making a habit of meal planning! It’s the answer to life’s most frequent questions — especially “What’s for dinner?”

Here at Kitchn, we will be the first to admit that meal planning isn’t a cake walk — but it’s also not a completely unattainable ideal reserved for a certain echelon of hyper-organized home cooks. Anyone can meal plan. Yes, even you.

The real mystery isn’t how to meal plan, though. It’s how to stick with it. We asked home cooks in various stages of their meal planning journeys how they started, and how they stick with it. Here are their best tips.

Anyone who’s ever done a renovation on a budget knows that you have to find places to cut costs. Everything can’t be a splurge, after all. When my husband and I redid our home’s third floor to make it a full-time Airbnb, we were starting from scratch, so expensive things like HVAC systems ripped huge chunks out of our budget. I knew we had to restore the gorgeous original wood floors, and that meant another big expense.

Despite pinching pennies and getting creative with things like a bathroom door that we made from a $20 vintage office door at Habitat ReStore, a cabinet from an architectural salvage shop, and going the IKEA way with the kitchen sink, we were scraping the bottom of the barrel when it came to the kitchen floor.

Well, you can’t say that People magazine doesn’t give the people what … no one asked for. The celebrity mag has announced that it is teaming up with the Food Network to produce a one-hour special called “Sexiest Chef Alive.” Apparently its target audience is the sliver of overlap in the Venn diagram of “the five or six people who enjoy People magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ issue” and “the five or six people who fetishize this particular occupation.”

My pantry is pretty trim, given the limited space I have in my apartment kitchen, but one thing I always keep on hand is a can of cannellini beans. Their versatility alone is worth giving them room in the pantry, among the boxes of pasta and bags of rice. Pop open a can or two, and in next to no time they become a simple and satisfying dinner any night of the week. Here are my 10 favorite ways to use them.

In case you’re not familiar with the premise of Dollar Tree, here it is: Everything they sell is $1. Wander through the store, and you’ll find everything from dinnerware and kids’ gear to cleaning supplies and home improvement tools — all for a dollar (sometimes you get multiples for a buck!). Yes, while some stores with “dollar” in the name have gotten away from keeping everything under $1, Dollar Tree has managed to stick with it. Part of the thrill of going to the store is seeing what they’ve got and marveling that, gasp, this is only $1?

But beyond the thrill of the hunt, there’s something you might not have known about Dollar Tree that makes it even better: You can buy stuff online (and in bulk, no less!).

Almost every weekend, you can find me in the kitchen for an hour or two meal prepping. It’s the weekly ritual of putting in upfront work — prepping and cooking — to make feeding yourself and your family during the week a whole lot easier. A few years (and literally hundreds of meal prep sessions) later, I’ve got this process down to a science. Here are the biggest mistakes to avoid (and what to do instead!) during your next meal prep session.

Every once in a while, you’ve got to question age-old “truths.” I find that’s especially the case with appliances, which manufacturers are constantly innovating and updating. My new-ish oven heats up quickly, so I don’t have to remember to turn it on 30 minutes before I’m ready to bake cookies, like the one I grew up with. Our refrigerator water dispenser works when a door is open, even though I’ve been trained to wait by my mother-in-law’s fridge, which stops the flow when a door opens.

So even though we’ve heard that running hot water from your kitchen sink before you run the dishwasher can make the appliance more efficient, we thought it was time to revisit the subject and make sure it was still true by consulting the pros: Dirk Sappok, head of product development at Miele, and Travis Robertson, knowledge manager at Sears Home Services.

First, let’s start with the basics.

It is estimated that there will be 1,735,350 new cases of cancer in the United States in 2018. Additionally, it is projected that 609,640 people will die from the disease. There’s a reason why a packet of ranch seasoning is the secret to so many crazy-delicious recipes, from chicken marinade and yogurt dip to potato salad and popcorn seasoning (yeah, you should try it). It just has that special something (along with a heavy dose of nostalgia) that homemade recipes can’t quite seem to capture.

Well, I’m happy to report that Julia Turshen has simply nailed homemade ranch dressing in her new cookbook, Now & Again: Go-To Recipes, Inspired Menus + Endless Ideas For Reinventing Leftovers. Her secret? Garlic two ways, resulting in a ranch that would fool any Hidden Valley devotee.
