The most wonderful time of the year continues: fall grocery season! Aldi has been rolling out all sorts of pumpkin-, maple-, and cinnamon-centric treats all month long (with even more coming out in October). Each seasonal item will only be available for a limited time, so I wasted no time taste testing some of the most fall-y items.

Here’s what I thought.

Being healthy can feel like a chore. You think that you have to cook special food or try trendy fitness classes to achieve any healthy goals, but when I talked to some really healthy individuals — from the founder of Whole30 to a sleep doctor — none of them brought up any scary so-called-superfoods or intense workout routines.

Turns out being healthy is just about making a few very simple, but very good, choices.

When I’m planning a serious cooking day, there are two things I need besides all the ingredients and kitchen tools: A good apron and sturdy shoes.

And one of my favorite apron brands, Hedley & Bennett, just announced that they are getting into the shoe game. Yes, really! The stylish and practical apron brand teamed up with Vans to create the most colorful kitchen shoes on the planet and I’m kind of already obsessed with them. These soles have soul.

With the temperatures finally starting to drop after a steamy summer, our attention quickly turns to homey dishes that warm us from the inside out. You all definitely agree, as our most popular fall recipes are just that. Some require an afternoon spent curled up with a book while it cooks away in the oven, while others come together quickly after a day outside in the brisk air. All, however, are perfectly suited for the season.

I stand at about five feet and three inches, and I’ve yet to live in a house with a kitchen designed for not-so-tall people. While I appreciate maximizing wall space with cabinets that reach the ceiling, over the years it has become incredibly annoying to drag a chair away from my kitchen table or climb onto the counter to get something down from the top shelf. And because I like to keep my kitchen fully stocked with baking ingredients, snacks, and booze, there’s always something on the top shelf.

To most chefs, a good knife is the essential kitchen tool. So it’s no wonder why Top Chef‘s famous send off is “Chef, please pack your knives and leave.” Those contestants may be willing to be parted from their friends, family, and restaurants for weeks, but nothing comes between them and their knives.

Surprisingly, though, chefs don’t get all snobby when asked to recommend knives on the less pricey end of the scale. Just as bargain hunters can often discover a perfectly respectable bottle of wine in the $10-and-under bin, the chefs I spoke to agree: Home cooks (like you!) have plenty of good choices if they want to spend less than $100 — or even a lot less. The trick is knowing what to look for.

When it comes to veggies, the more you eat the better. But of course, not all vegetables are created equally. Eating iceberg lettuce, which is basically a vehicle for salad dressing, just won’t deliver as many nutrients as a powerhouse like broccoli or kale. And then, there’s the question of where you get your vegetables— from the produce section, the freezer, or the canned goods aisle.

Research reveals that fresh and frozen produce are basically equivalent nutritionally — in fact, with some vegetables, such as green beans, frozen has an edge over the limp, past-their-prime version in your fridge. But what about canned vegetables? Are budget-friendly, long-lasting canned veggies a good, healthy alternative to fresh?

To find out if you should keep your can opener at the ready, we checked in with Diana Orenstein, RD, a dietician at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, who shared some considerations to keep in mind.

We all know that canned pumpkin is a must-have product to keep on hand for fall baking, but it may surprise you to learn that this fall staple actually makes its way into my grocery cart every single week — all year long. And not because I’m obsessed with the pumpkin pie spice trend, I promise!

Believe it or not, I use pumpkin as a staple ingredient in my favorite daily smoothie! For me, pure canned pumpkin (preferably organic, but if not, that’s okay) is a smoothie essential that boosts flavor and that whole nutrition factor. I use canned pumpkin to thicken a drink the way other smoothie-lovers might use bananas or avocados. Keep reading to find out why.
