If there’s anyone who knows her way around a Latin American grocery store in the U.S., it’s Yvette Marquez-Sharpnack. She a proud Tejana, born and raised in El Paso but strongly in touch with her Mexican roots. She’s also a food blogger and the author behind Muy Bueno: Three Generations of Authentic Mexican Flavor, a cookbook co-written with her sister and mother, inspired by family recipes taught by her grandmother, Jesusita.

Yvette started the Muy Bueno blog as a way to keep her family recipes alive by passing them down from generation to generation. Her aim is to help people discover her grandma’s secrets to great Mexican food — and that’s not without a few shortcuts! We got a chance to catch up with Yvette and talk about her favorite recipes featuring canned goods that you will find in your local Mexican grocery store.

Here are her top picks.

We don’t want to spread rumors or anything (because we don’t have much info right now) but we hear that Costco is looking at offering an on-demand streaming service. The idea is that it’d be available to members (possibly only those with the $120 Gold Star Executive Membership) and would allow people to watch TV shows and/or movies instantly without having to buy or download anything on the spot.

Beef and broccoli ranks high on my list of takeout favorites. The savory combination of tender beef, sweet broccoli, and vibrant carrots cooked in an umami-rich garlicky sauce is pure comfort in a bowl — especially if I can eat it in my pajamas on the couch.

Homemade beef and broccoli from the slow cooker gives me the exact same satisfaction, as well as the ability to customize the sauce to my liking and use up beef and veggies that might be languishing in the fridge or freezer. Plus, the slow cooker does all the work of cooking the beef and vegetables for you, either while you cozy up on the couch or run errands. Here’s how you can make beef and broccoli at home that I promise you is even better than takeout.

Knife blocks seem like a good idea. They keep your knives safely contained and look pretty cool on the countertop. I mean, anytime you can put a big block of wood in your home, you feel like you earn street cred just by looking at it. Often included as a value-add when you buy a set of knives, knife blocks come in all shapes and sizes, and are typically made of a single block of wood with angled slots just big enough for your knives to slide into.

But despite the convenience, and that fact they’re solely meant to organize your knives, they’re actually not that great. Here are three ways your knife block is doing more harm than good.

I used to be obsessed with discovering new ways to cook potatoes. Now I’m just obsessed with creating new varieties of smashed potatoes. Ever since I first came upon the brilliant technique, in which small boiled potatoes are smashed, slathered with oil, and baked until crispy, I can’t stop experimenting. My kitchen has turned into a smashed potato factory, and each piping-hot batch is better than the last.

Whenever I have to spell the word broccoli, I involuntarily sing a song from the widely un-acclaimed, 2003 Eddie Murphy film, Daddy Daycare, that likely no one remembers except for me.

In the scene, Murphy’s character, who works at an advertising firm, has hired two grown adults dressed in broccoli and carrot suits to host a focus group for kids. This is all a part of his futile attempt to market a new vegetable-flavored cereal, Veggie-Os, to a very uninterested audience.

“B-R-O-C-C-O-L-I *clap, clap, clap* I am the broccoli, don’t know why.”

Swedish meatballs meet Italian meatballs in this international Instant Pot mashup of flavor and quick cooking function. Traditional Swedish style meatballs are often prepared with ground beef or pork and combined with organ meats such as liver. These meatballs are then served with a creamy gravy. In contrast, the Italian style meatballs contain more herbs and are typically served in a tomato based red sauce. Borrowing ideas from both cuisines, this recipe uses a Swedish style base meatball with ground turkey and liver tossed with Italian herbs and covered in a creamy romesco style sauce.
