The word philosophy is made from philo, meaning love, and sophia, meaning wisdom. Philosophy is, quite literally, a study rooted in a love of wisdom. While you may not wish to contemplate metaphysics and theories on what it means to know something, we all can gain something from a personal journey to determine our own life philosophy.

Jesse Irizzary is only 31 years old but when it comes to coaching he is an old soul. He has a 3,200 square foot facility on 21st Street in New York city called JDI Barbell Gym. When he first opened the gym, he built everything by hand. He laid down the rubber mats, put in soundproofing insulation in the ceiling, and built his own lifting platforms.

September is very much a month of transitions. We swap our tank tops for sweaters, our lazy routine for a more strict one, and clear out the tomatoes and corn to make room for apples and pumpkin. Our most-saved vegetarian recipes this past month reflected this mood. Some of the recipes celebrated the last flavors of summer, while others were extra comforting in order to help make the dip in the temperature outside a little more tolerable.

I’ve never been great at the whole lunch thing. I rarely have the foresight to prep things in advance, and buying lunch every day can really add up. So more often than not, I snack. A little bit of this and little bit of that becomes my surprisingly satisfying midday meal, with bonus points that I can assemble everything quickly — with little-to-no actual cooking. Here’s how I build my snack-box lunch.

“Dude, I want to learn this thing, other people pull this off, so I should be able to do so, too. Come on, let’s do this.”

“No, if you don’t break your neck you will break your back, perhaps a leg, or two, and no one in the world will ever talk to you again, because you will look stupid.”

The combination of bacon, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes is always a win, no matter what you do with them (Brussels and pork are meant to be together). But I added some grainy mustard just to make things more interesting. This is the perfect side dish for a cold evening!

Making salad dressing from scratch is nearly as fast and easy as shaking up a store-bought bottle, and the taste is exponentially better than even the most “gourmet” jar of blue cheese dressing. (And can I just say that homemade ranch is reason alone to eat a salad tonight?)

Things I’m Up to and Interested In

Quote I can’t fathom: “‘Currently with the evidence [the totality of which has found that full-fat dairy is the healthiest kind] that we have reviewed, we still believe that you should try to limit your saturated fat including fat that this is coming from dairy products,’ commented Jo Ann Carson, PhD, of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a spokesperson for the American Heart Association.”

I worked on the set of Alton Brown’s Good Eats for several years, and one of my favorite episodes I ever worked on was American Classics IX: Pumpkin Pie. Not only did we have pumpkins grown out of season for recipe development, but we also built both a pumpkin patch and root cellar for shooting.

Some of my favorite recipes also came out of that episode, too; the whole pumpkin soup is something I still make once a year. And the pumpkin purée is also my go-to recipe — all thanks to one simple step. (And you can use that step with any pumpkin purée recipe, not just Alton’s.) Here’s his tip for better pumpkin purée.
