The best parts about spending the holidays with your family are the long evenings sipping cocoa, catching up on each other’s lives, and also getting to mess with the people you know best. Sure, the occasional prank on a friend is good for a few laughs, but playing a prank on your family means you know exactly how to really get to them — and you’re pretty much assured forgiveness. (Unless you cross the line. Don’t cross the line.)

This Christmas, Twitter user Judy Brown told the story of what might just be the best holiday prank of the year — or, rather, years, since it was not a single instance, but quite the long con.

Of all the joys associated with the Great British Bake Off — the lovable cast of bakers, the chemistry between new hosts Noel and Sandi — it’s the actual bakes that trump the rest.

Watching the bakers’ creations unfold is somehow both therapeutic and suspenseful. There’s only one downside: As beautiful as their baked goods might look, and while I completely trust Paul and Prue to be honest about the taste, I always end up wishing more than anything that I could try one of those beautiful cakes, and I mourn the loss of all the leftovers that must get wasted once the judging is over. Thanks to former contestant (and runner-up) Kim-Joy, we now know that all the baked goods that aren’t sampled by the judges do find a loving home.

Costco rolls out new products in its stores all year long. The company will often try out a product in one region, and if it does well they’ll slowly roll it out to other regions as the year goes on.

This year we were excited to find things like boxes of prepped spaghetti squash from A La Carte, spun maple butter from Parker’s Real Maple, and Fit Fit Apricot and Almond Bites. But of course, as some products come, others go. We’re keeping our fingers crossed they’ll keep these new guys in stock.

Meanwhile, though, products with Costco’s private-label Kirkland Signature brand tend to stick around quite a bit longer, and this year saw a few new favorites hit the shelves. Here are the best new Kirkland products introduced in 2018 that you can bet will be around next year too.

If you go for a walk in Seattle, where I live, it’s hard not to notice the occasional whiff of rosemary as you pass certain houses. The herb grows like a weed around here, and that means that a quick jaunt to pick up the kids at daycare can quickly turn into a dinner craving: what can we make that will weave that lovely scent in, but never let it overpower? Natasha at Salt and Lavender has just the answer with her creamy Dijon rosemary chicken.

Oven pancakes are one of those simple dishes that never get old. Just like with their more popular cousins, pies and galettes, you can use fresh fruit or berries to change the recipe by season. They’re also easy to scale, and they make a wonderful brunch dish for a few friends or a big family gathering.

I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the snow isn’t too bad. Last year we got a “big” snowfall — six inches! — and the whole town went crazy. The kids had three days off from school, and parents and children alike were running around, all kinds of giddy. After being in New York for more than a decade, my response was a little more tempered — especially because it was the first time I had my own sidewalk to shovel. I quickly learned that if you don’t keep on top of it, snow quickly turns to ice that can stay in place for days, even with a light snowfall.

That’s why I was excited to learn about this super-easy trick to make shoveling snow a breeze. And, nope, it’s not salt!

Most days, it seems like no matter how much you clean, the kitchen is always dirty five minutes later. There is a never-ending amount of dirty dishes. Even when you’re done with everything in the sink, the dishes from lunch need to be washed and the cycle begins again. You find dust, debris, and lord only knows what on your floors just 20 minutes after you’ve swept.

As cliché as it sounds, it’s often true that you’re really only as good as your tools. This is especially true when we’re talking about cleaning your kitchen. The better armed you are, the more likely it is that your space will sparkle.

And while we rave a lot (like, a lot) about vinegar as a natural cleaner for the kitchen, you do need a few more helpers in your toolkit. These are the tools we raved about in 2018.
