Fun fact: Mushrooms and rice are best friends, and when you put them together they complement each other beautifully and both become more than they were on their own. Mushrooms are tiny buttons of umami, and if you brown them nicely in a pan they will expel flavor in every direction, which makes them a perfect match for rice, which absorbs any flavor in the vicinity. When cooked together as in this hearty mushroom rice, they turn into a beautiful side dish.

The hero’s journey is a tale as old as time. You can see it in just about any story we share with others, from movies (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, etc.) to television series and books.

While the details differ from story to story, the foundation is exactly the same in every single iteration:

For many years my husband and I tried to set a budget, but it never really stuck. And for a while that was fine. We didn’t struggle to pay bills or have tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and we always had a healthy savings. But last year we relocated, and my husband’s income changed in a way we didn’t expect; we had to get really serious about budgeting our regular income and his variable income.

About the same time I discovered The Budget Mom on Instagram, and my family and I started using her methods for tracking and budgeting our expenses. The biggest challenge we faced was finding a food budget that worked well for our family. Here’s how Kumiko Love taught me to set a realistic food budget that my family can actually live with.

The process of cooking — that by which raw ingredients are transformed into deliciousness — may technically happen only after the oven heats up, or the pan on the stove gets hot, but it really begins before that. It starts the moment you walk into your kitchen and decide to cook something.

Before you pour a little oil into the pan and turn on the stove, stop. Do these five things first, and your cooking session will certainly be less stressful and way more enjoyable. At Kitchn, our editors develop and debut brand-new recipes on the site every single week. But at home, we also have our own tried-and-true dishes that we make over and over again — because quite simply? We love them. And we decided to start sharing some of our absolute favorites with you. Here’s a peek into what we’re cooking and eating in our own kitchens.

There is good spaghetti with meat sauce; there is great spaghetti with meat sauce; and then there is this version, made in an Instant Pot, which lives on a level all its own. Make spaghetti in your Instant Pot once, and you may never make it any other way again. I speak from experience.

I first made this recipe about two months ago, and even now when I think about it, the most warm, satisfying feeling ripples through my belly. It was hands-down the best thing I cooked in 2018 (and I cook a lot), and has been the only way I’ve cooked spaghetti since.

Yes, you’ve had apple cider vinegar (or ACV, if you prefer) in your cabinet for years, but it’s currently having a moment. Whether you’re drinking it straight or getting ready to pickle everything in sight, apple cider vinegar is truly a pantry staple.

If your bottle has sat unused and unloved for too long, you probably just need some new ways to use it. You’re in luck! These 21 recipes rely on ACV to varying degrees, but they all wouldn’t be the same without it. Now the only question you have to answer is: filtered or unfiltered?
