Hi Mark!
I had been fairly healthy my entire life, but had always carried about 10 extra pounds. When I turned 24, that changed. All of a sudden, I started experiencing allergies. Major weight gain. Depression. Acne. Itchy scalp. Boils. Missed periods and debilitating pain when they did come. Joint pain. IBS. These were all new things to me.
I saw dozens of doctors – German ones, Canadian ones, American and […]

I’m not talking about Christmas. I’m talking about Super Christmassacre 2010.
This time my cheesecake mastery will be pushed to its utmost limits. I can sense the ominous presence of the cheesecake that awaits me tomorrow from miles ahead. Its dark and brooding power is not to be trifled with.
However, I will not come unprepared. I have honed my skills. Mastered new techniques. Just a few weeks ago, I made quick work of a cheesecake that had teamed up with a goose. I ate them both. Whole.
No one knows how this battle will go down. Anything can happen. One thing is for sure; I’ll give em hell.

Merry Christmas everyone.
P.S. Want to avoid unwanted weight gain during holiday eating? Then you better check out “Cheat Day Strategies for a Hedonist.”

I realized that yesterdays post was very…male-centric. So I thought I could show how the exact same tactical approach can be used for weight loss, but this time I will use a woman as an example.
Instead of the carpet bomb approach that many women use towards weight loss (eat less and run and exercise until they are ’small’), I like taking a tactical approach that really defines goals and vision.
So we can use the example of a 5′6 woman who is 31 years old and weighs 160 pounds. She has about 35% body fat . She isn’t sedentary, but isn’t exactly a ‘gym junkie’ either.
Now instead of just saying “lose weight” we will use the Venus Index principles to map out a weight loss guide.
At a height of 5′6 we know that the average Lean Body Mass (LBM) is about 104 pounds, and a little less than 50% of that […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.

Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds

Walk for 10 seconds

Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.

So what you have is a total of 4 minutes of workout time.

Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.

Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study […]

Whether you’re cooking prime rib, pot roast, top round or brisket, a roast is a great way to feed a holiday crowd. A roast makes for a substantial meal, pairs well with any of your favorite side dishes and offers the promise of leftovers the next day.
A roast can always be seasoned with salt and pepper, but for the holidays we like to spice things up a little. The spice aisle is full of pre-made spice blends, but you can easily personalize your holiday meal by simply opening up your spice drawer at home and mixing together a dry rub of your own.
Dry rubs can contain however many spices you want to add. They also usually contain salt, although you can leave this out and simply salt the meat to taste after it cooks. You can add equal amounts of each spice, or add more of a specific spice so […]

It’s been a year chock-full of notable developments here at MDA. Can you say first PrimalCon, first cookbook, first reader cookbook, and the Primal Blueprint Fitness eBook (not to mention new Primal Nutrition products)? On top of it all, the MDA web community, is bigger, more active, and more involved than ever. I’d say we’ve pushed the envelope in all directions this year, eh?
At the close of this eventful year, I think a thoughtful “look back” is in order. (No sappy music or evocative stills, however.) 2010 was hands-down a year of mind-blowing recipes, kick start WOW workouts, record Primal Challenge giveaways, pensive creativity posts, tongue-in-cheek jests, scientific scrutiny – and plenty of healthy Primal debate along the way. It was the year of the massively popular forum and of the now celebrity figure Grok himself (emblazoned on t-shirts, tattoos, etc.). Finally, it was also – more than ever – […]

I’m always amazed at the ‘carpet bomb’ way of thinking that most people use to approach building muscle.
“Eat 10,000 calories a day, train hard with lots of rest, don’t do any cardio and sleep 12 hours a night and you will build muscle”
Which to me is very similar to telling people the secret to getting rich is:
“Work 5 full times jobs, live in a shack for 8 years, only spend 3 dollars a day on food and have no possessions and you’ll get rich”
OK..maybe not the best analogy, but you get the idea.
The fact is by adding a ton of body fat you can’t really tell how or where you are gaining your muscle.
And if you are a skinny guy (or girl) to begin with, it’ll actually FEEL like you are adding muscle.
But this is an aimless way approach to building muscle. There’s no true road map, no goals other […]

Some folks have reported issues with viewing or loading my site. Such as: site takes a long time to load, site freezes or the browser is spazzing out.
Going by some feedback, it seems to be mainly Internet Explorer (7.0 or lower) and Firefox with tons of extensions causing trouble.
It seems my site is best viewed with Google Chrome and Safari. I’m personally using Chrome, which in my opinion is the fastest and most user friendly browser, and never had any issues with it.
Either way, I’d appreciate if people who’s having issues, or has had issues, took the time to fill in the poll I’m running. It’s located right below “About the author” on the right sidebar. That would allow me to identify the culprits and give recommendations on what browsers this site is best viewed with.

I am pleased to report that the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has just listed my very own “The Primal Blueprint Cookbook” as one of the five worst (most unhealthy) cookbooks of 2010, along with cookbooks by Gordon Ramsay, Barefoot Contessa, Trisha Yearwood and the creators of Top Chef. Why am I glad to be the author of one of the worst cookbooks of the year, you might be wondering? Look who’s giving out the award. None other than the PCRM, home of such vaunted nutritional giants as Fuhrman, McDougall, Esselstyn, Barnard, and T. Colin Campbell and a celebrated bastion of vegan propagandists. This is Bizarro food world, guys, where “unhealthy” means “healthy” and “desiccated wheat grass smegma” means “grass-fed butter.” The PCRM official “New Four Food Groups,” for example, consist of whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. (Sugar’s still sugar, though.) Even the American Council on Science and […]

What if a brief exercise of 60-90 seconds done before eating, made it less likely that food would get stored as body fat?
