The motivation for the get together was provided by the possibility of a free cow. The opportunity to share with our friends how our family has been trying to live an eat was an added bonus. Busy schedules prevented us from planning a large scale get together, but the stars aligned Sunday morning for a dinner date with a few friends later in the evening. My wife and I never hid our agenda, and explained to our friends that we were […]

The Arthur Morgan School Grokfeast was held at 5:00pm on September, 2010. We are a boarding and day school for 7-9th graders in the mountains of western North Carolina. Our program is based on the philosophies of Johann Pestalozzi, N.S.F. Grundtvig, Mahatma Gandhi, Maria Montessori, John Dewey, and Arthur Morgan as well as the Quaker values of simple living, consensus decision-making, and non-violent […]

Our day was a Grok meets Korg kind of day. Although us Moylans are no where near perfect, we try to be as primal as possible most of the time. Imagine when the Korg-ish Aris kids stayed the night a few weeks ago only to learn we have NO cereal in the house…gulp.
We started our day with a trip to the playground. We bundled up pretty good since the temperature was low. Everyone […]

Sara Kate is a faithful follower of Mark’s Daily Apple, and she encouraged many of us on Facebook to take on the September 30-Day Challenge. Jessica, one of her friends that decided to take on the challenge, also decided it would be fun to organize a picnic and win a cow. It wasn’t hard to get JP on board: he is usually up for anything. The three of us go to the track on Sundays for what we call “Sunday rundays,” which just […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.

Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds

Walk for 10 seconds

Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.

So what you have is a total of 4 minutes of workout time.

Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.

Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study […]

On Sunday afternoon, in the gorgeous, if unseasonably warm, weather currently being enjoyed near Denver, Colorado, a group of 8 humans and 1 corgi named Bugsy gathered for a day of truly primal enjoyment. Melody (our organizer), Katie H., her son Squishy, Katie C., Minnesota Mike (Katie’s boyfriend), John, Peggy and her friend Mike (who is not normally primal, but came along for the food and fun) ate food prepared primally […]

My extended family is becoming more and more interested in eating “clean” food, and so when they wanted to have a get-together this weekend, I jumped at the chance to make it primal. My sister was hosting, and while she is not exactly primal, she did agree to serve the grains on the side. She made up all of the fixins’ for a […]

Alley Cat’s Primal 31st Birthday Party
Half way through my 30-Day Primal Challenge, I received an email from my mother. It had come to my sister’s attention that my family had forgotten my 30th birthday from last year. At the time, my baby was barely 2 weeks old and I was totally focused on bare survival and getting some sleep.

I love making lists and cooking food, so immediately started planning my 31st birthday party for 12th September 2010. I wanted to keep the party small and […]

The Cleveland Groks got together on a rather chilly and windy Saturday afternoon for good food and some serious monkey business on the shore of Lake Erie. Our VIP guests included gorilla and squirrel, and although we were rather tempted to eat them, they made for good conversation and the girls got kind of attached to squirrel, so their lives were spared. We had much better grassfed meat, anyway! MeatMe216 hit the drum while the flames seared the meat, and after all were fed, it was off to the field for a few rounds of Frisbee. Then – to the playground with gorilla! Squirrel decided to […]

Preparing for the Grokfeast
We decided to center our Grokfeast around unusual meats. I found a source for elk at my local farmers market: Hawk’s Hill Elk Ranch. A local restaurant meat supply store provided the other meats – rabbit, duck, and Cornish game hen. The night before the Grokfeast, we had all the meats thawed, and the elk prepared and ready to go in the crockpot. At 3 am the morning of the Grokfeast (don’t worry, I was awake anyway to feed Derek), I started the elk cooking. Then, at a more reasonable time that […]
