Plans for the picnic started when a wellness committee member at work (Nikki Rebernak) read about the Grokfeast challenge and visions of cow patties danced in her head. Our company has two main buildings on a large plot of land. In between the buildings is a cow pasture and a walking path. She came to me with the idea of suckering our wellness committee into having a picnic with the cows… and it was all downhill from there. In a flurry of e-mails we had 12 people agree to have lunch together. Some brought their own food, Nikki made […]

What a day! The day began in classic primal style – with an obstacle to overcome. We had originally planned on going to the local park to grill our large amount of meat and enjoy the other primal dishes. Unfortunately all the grills at the park were already occupied, so we ended up hauling all of our “goods” back to Sarah’s house to use her […]

We had a “rockin’” good time at our Grokfeast. It was on September 19th. Our menu had a Southwest theme (I figure cavefolks usually had themed parties, didn’t they?) and it was delicious. My husband’s CrossFit gym, Wildcat CrossFit, was in the process of moving to their new location, so our Grokfeast was partly a celebration and […]

When I saw this contest description, I knew that I had to get my kids involved. By ‘my kids’ I mean my 4th grade class. From the beginning of the school year, they’ve listened to me talk about just eating fruits, vegetables and meat and this contest was my chance to demonstrate a good time, Old-School err…. Primal-School. The parents think I’m a bit nuts, but they’ve seemed to embrace, or at least can’t deny, […]

‘Twas the night of the Grokfeast, when all through the ‘hood
was a dozen or so Grok-wannabes hunting for food;
Their tummies were hungry and fridges were so bare, they foraged
together, because they care;
With Audra stoking the fire, and Frank roasting the meat, Cherry and
Robin busily cutting the veggies to eat;
Lindsay and Eden carefully weighing and measuring to ensure every
Grokee would get their fill,
As Joe watched the little ones, […]

Are you sitting down? If not, you should be, because I am about to tell you of the GrokFeast we threw that can only be described as the best party of the Neolithic era. One part luau pig, one part dinosaur, and one part giant bonfire dance celebration with one hundred of our nearest and dearest friends is all you need to have a true caveman party.

It all started at six in the morning when we went down to the beach and began digging the pig hole. Once the fire died down and […]

The Prize:
Lardo. What’s lardo? It’s delicious, precious, raw seasoned pork back fat from Mangalitsa pigs. You can slice it and eat it plain. You can melt it into a meal. It makes for a great, calorie dense snack if you’re a constant hiker. The winner of today’s contest will win four blocks of lardo, courtesy of Heath Putnam Farms. That’s roughly four pounds artisan pig fat in an assortment of seasonings (raw, garlic & oregano, Hungarian sweet paprika, black pepper and juniper berries). For the pig connoisseur, Mangalitsa pigs – also known as wooly pigs – are a lard-type swine. Their fat has such a light texture that it can be whipped like cream. If you’re looking for a new pork experience well beyond the joys of bacon, learn more about the wonders of the Wooly Pig, and check out Heath Putnam’s Wooly Pigs Blog.

The 30-Day Challenge began with […]

We started off the NorCal Paleo Grokfeast at our local rockclimbing gym in San Francisco. While we waited for participants to show up we weightlifted, did pull-ups, sit-ups and stretching. Sophia and Justine both unexpectedly showed up in their Vibram Five Finger Toe Shoes — Toe mates!

Next, we headed to Aquatic Park about 2 miles away for our cold water swim. […]

Our Primal Picnic was a meetup of the Austin Primal Living Group on meetup.com. We had a primal potluck picnic at Pease Park, a nice expansive park near downtown Austin. However to get to our meetup we first had to pass by a large group of sickly looking vegans and vegetarians who just happened to be having a meetup at the same time and place. To start off everyone went around and talked a little about how they got into primal living and why it appeals to them. For some it has helped with food intolerances and […]
