Our new Jiu Jitsu/MMA Coach Jeremiah Lancaster

KnuckleUp is proud to announce major changes in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / MMA program for this upcoming fall.  New instructors, brand new classes, and brand-spanking-new bjj installations.
To keep myself form “hyping” this post too much, let’s start with the changes that are already in place, and then we’ll discuss the future ones..
New Jiu Jitsu & MMA Coach
Jeremiah Lancaster has quietly taken over the BJJ classes, and his extensive background in wrestling adds highly effective strategies to the jiu jitsu mix.
Here’s a little bit on Jeremiah’s background:

Today I am putting up a guest post from Vic over at Gym Junkies. Although my workout philosophy is different than what Vic teaches, the guy keeps in amazing condition year round and has my respect. I'm the first to admit that there are many, many approaches to getting lean and fit and I would be skeptical of anyone who claims to have "the only way that works". Gym Junkies might be the most organized fitness blogs online today. My favorite part is the "How to" videos that are organized in the left hand sidebar. The site is just full of step-by-step instruction and feels almost like a paid course in strength training.

[Once you get lean, it is easier to stay motivated to eat well and workout. The key is to get to he point where you feel like you look great. Once you feel and look your best, […]

This post is to prove to people they can reach an ultra-high degree of conditioning with something as simple as the pull up bar. I've been writing a lot about body weight training and I've personally been trying to get better at pull ups and chin ups. You guys may or may not have heard of the Bar-Barians, but these guys are flat out impressive. They don't train with weights, but I would go as far to say that they are most likely in better shape and more ripped than just about anyone in your gym. If you have never been exposed to the Bar-Barians, prepare to be "Wow'ed"!

[The Bar-Barians were founded in 2004 and are based out of Brooklyn, New York. These guys are some of the most impressive athletes I have ever seen. Brooklyn has a reputation for being a tough area, but I’m guessing people don’t mess […]

Another Interview

Here’s a recent interview I did for a dutch site.
Other interviews and articles can be found here.

Martin, we can all read your bio on your blog, but what have you been up to in the last 6 months? Any news on a book for example?
I’ve been keeping very busy with clients, articles (for the swedish bodybuilding mag “Body”) and book writing. More of the former, less of the latter, but I’m picking up the pace to get the book out fairly soon. I actually have a date set in my mind, but won’t say anything more on that topic. It’ll be done when it’s done (and hopefully worth the wait).
Some people complain of headaches during the fast, any idea what causes this and better yet, how to solve it?
The most probable cause in this context is hypoglycemia and the headaches are likely to occur after low carb (rest) […]

Yvonne Craig is my idea of a woman who stayed in great shape her entire career without losing her femininity. In fact, I think women had it right in the 60's. For the most part they remained slim while keeping their soft curves. When men get too big and ripped it looks "forced". The same goes for women. When women overdo their workouts and do too much volume of lifting they can put on too much muscle. I think light muscle tone while being slim is the ideal route. I know that I risk upsetting some people by posting my opinion here, but I guarantee you that I'm not in the minority here.

[This is a picture of Yvonne Craig from Star Trek in 1969. What many people don't know is that she was 32 when she played the green woman (or green lady). Staying lean and fit is easy when […]

Carb Junkie Weekend

Last week, a client of mine volunteered to act as my personal guinea pig for an completely un-scientific look at the effect of sugar and insulin on the human body.
The Experiment
From Monday to Thursday, my client (Mr.X) followed a diet consisting of fresh vegetables (no root vegetables or squash), berries, small amounts of nuts & seeds, unprocessed animal protein, unprocessed fats, salt, spices, coffee with cream, tea, water and 1 tbsp of fish oil per day.
From Friday to Sunday, he could eat whatever he wanted.
Come Monday morning, we would take some measurements and assess how his body responded to both diets.
The Back Story on Mr. X

First of all, I should mention that Mr.X is a frustrating client.
He has had great results in spite of ignoring at least half of my dietary recommendations. The SOB has lost over 25 lbs and gained 8 lbs of muscle in 4 1/2 months due […]

Last Thursday’s blog post on ‘The Zen of Nutrition‘ is probably the best example of my current views on Health and Nutrition.
And, after reading through the comments I see that a lot of people feel the same as I do.
we’ve had ENOUGH. (Why do we try to make it so hard?)
It’s time to de-clutter our minds and simplify our approach.
There is ZERO relationship between how many fitness guru emails we receive each day, how many fitness books we read, how many health forums we visit, and how much weight we lose or how healthy we feel.
Or as Terri put it
“I own about 200 diet/nutrition books, and seriously, for what? What has worked for me and always has worked for me, is cutting down on calories.”

And Todd hit the nail on the head whe he said:
“Overcomplicating is a major source of waste, anxiety, and confusion.”

Stressing over what we eat, how we […]

Questions & Answers

Another Q&A. Click here to see all Q&A’s.
Intermittent Fasting and TestosteroneFirst a question related to the effects of dieting on testosterone and libido/reproductive function in general –
Q: “My sex drive just winds down to nearly nothing when I’m running an intense caloric deficit. Is there some documented/anecdotal correlation on this, or is it random according to the individual?”
A: It’s not random, it’s a fact that weight loss/calorie restriction, even moderate in nature, causes a delayed response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This neurohormone is secreted in a pulsatile manner from the hypothalamus, and upon binding to receptors in the pituitary gland, it activates synthesis of reproductive hormones, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH). This axis is partially under control by “master” hormones involved in sensing the general energy status of the body; leptin and insulin, for example.
An energy deficit lowers leptin, which in turn impacts the reproductive axis negatively. This makes […]

Apparently, a good portion of America has gone completely insane over healthcare reform.

We’ve heard from the politicians – Democrat & Republican.
We’ve heard from the pro gov’t healthcare crowd…[unitelligible screaming]
We’ve heard from the anti gov’t healthcare crowd…[unitelligible screaming]
And we’ve heard way too much from the teleprompter readers on tv – left & right & even more right

So, today, let’s take a look at what America’s favorite celebrity doctors have to say about healthcare reform in America.
First up, Oprah’s personal health guru:
Dr. Oz
Part of the challenge we face is that all eyes are focused on healthcare finance arguments in Washington, but the real action is taking place in our homes across this great land. We cannot have a wealthy country without being a healthy country, but healthcare finance solutions by themselves do not help us care for our health. An insurance card is correlated with, but does not guarantee a clean bill […]
