My mom taught me how to arrange flowers, negotiate the purchase of an antique rug, and wear a black turtleneck year-round. I taught her how to shop for groceries. And recently, her lesson moved on from regular grocery stores to one of my favorite places to hunt for specialty foods: HomeGoods.
My mom claims visiting the store feels like “shopping in our basement,” which refers to the mishmash of furniture, clothing, and knick-knacks you have to sort through before you find the thing that was worth the work it took looking for it. But catch me in the right mood and I’m thrilled by the prospect of wandering those aisles only to emerge with all kinds of delicious things to cook with or eat.
My mom joined me on my latest trip and these are the tips I passed along.
