<p>The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.</p>
<p>Sprint as hard as you can for <strong>20 seconds</strong></p>
<p>Walk for <strong>10 seconds</strong></p>
<p>Repeat 7 more times for a total of <strong>8 sets</strong>.</p>

Most of us are familiar with slow cookers and rely on them from time to time when we want a home cooked meal that requires very little effort. There are many reasons to love a slow cooker. Speed is not one of them.
A pressure cooker, on the other hand, can do just about everything a slow cooker can in a fraction of the time. The basic idea is the same: throw meat and vegetables in a pot, add seasonings and enough liquid to cover the ingredients, put on the lid and walk away. Are you familiar with the name Tyler Shields? I have to admit I wasn't either until a few days ago. Like often on the Internet, I got distracted from reading my email. I was on AOL and a picture grabbed my eye. It was of Danny Trejo the main character of the movie Machete looking kind of crazy with blood spattered on the wall behind him. The story wasn't about the movie Machete, but rather a photographer who blew up big in 2010. His name is Tyler Shields and my guess is that he will be a household name at some point in 2011. I was lucky enough to get a Q&A session with him…and he was gracious enough to let me post some of his work on my blog. I figured I would make this first post of the year, both entertaining and inspirational.

It seems like just yesterday that I posted my ambitious plans for 2010. With the inaugural PrimalCon held last April, Mark’s Daily Apple keeping me busy, and the release of my first cookbook and Primal Blueprint Fitness among many other things, the year flew by. And I wasn’t the only one hard at work. Friends such as Robb Wolf, Art De Vany, Gary Taubes, Loren Cordain have published books, touched folks’ lives, and have spread the word about a lifestyle revolution whose time has come. And it’s not just book authors. It’s bloggers, gym owners, trainers, doctors and people on the street talking about the Primal lifestyle. I’m thrilled to see the Primal/paleo movement steadily forcing it’s way into mainstream culture and I want to keep that momentum going. Q: About Body weight exercises…
I’ve read that you can’t make any strength or muscle gains with body weight exercises,  so I want your perspective, what kind of gains can I make with body weight exercises? If I add a weighted vest or some other weight that will force me to put more effort will it get me to gain strength or muscle?
A: My Answer…
Firstly, as with all fitness and nutrition questions, it’s hard to answer generally as every one’s situation is slightly different. Your training status, body weight, current strength all come into play, but for the most part many people can add both muscle and strength using body weight exercises. And, you could even keep this effect going by increasing the difficulty of the movements or greatly increasing the volume of training that you do.  But after a while you will eventually have to move […]

With holiday fun come and gone, it’s the time of year when we all truly settle into winter. Spring is a long way off at this point. The cold and darkness aren’t going anywhere any time soon. Most people find their way through the season with a mixture of enjoyment and impatience (and maybe a warm weather vacay), but others have serious reason to dread it each year. Few of us, I think, like giving up our extra hours of daylight. The relative darkness of winter, however, presents a particularly harsh challenge to those who battle SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder – a form of depression associated with fall and winter’s more limited sunlight.

Like last week’s stress post, I’m not going to delve deeply into why sleep is so important. I’ve done it before, and doing so again would simply take up valuable space that’s better used for action items – for actual sleep hacks that you can put into effect immediately. Just rest assured that it’s crucial to health, longevity, immunity, recovery from training, cognition, aptitude while operating vehicles and/or machinery, insulin sensitivity and, well, do I need to go on? If you want to enjoy your limited time on the planet, you better get your Zs.
