See Some Warriors Sweatin’ It Uuupp!

I am cautious about recommending explosive strength training due to a higher risk of injury compared with slow and steady training. That being said, it is an effective way to gain strength quickly when done properly. I haven't dug in deep into this topic on my blog so far, so I wanted to take the time to do this now. The same weight can generate a different amount of tension to the muscles worked, depending upon the speed at which that weight is lifted. This is what I plan on talking about in detail in this post, along with a way to include this technique into your workout routine.

WOW: Cave Burpees

Announcement: Stay tuned. If everything goes as planned I’ll be making a big announcement here on MDA in the next few hours. Grok on!

For time:
100 Burpees (with Pushups and Jumps)*

How-to:
Warmup: A couple rotations of the Grok Squat.
This is an oldie but a goodie. All you need is a small patch of floor space and your bodyweight to perform this WOW. There is no equipment and little space required, so it’s perfect for a quick, impromptu workout while on the road or when you want to stay indoors, out of the harsh fall and winter elements.
Give it a shot, record your time and list it in today’s comment board to compare with others. Just finishing 100 burpees is an accomplishment in itself, but if you’re a fit individual and would like a goal to shoot for I’d recommend attempting to do it in under 10 minutes. Sub-4 […]

When it comes to cardio workouts and weight loss, a lot of people want to know what the best cardio for weight loss is. That’s because over time, people have been convinced that the only way to lose weight and get in amazing shape is through hard, long, boring cardio.
Now don’t get me wrong – I’m not against cardio. If you enjoy real endurance running or like looking at the “calories burnt meter” on the elliptical machine, then by all means go for it. I actually think that medium-distance cardio can be helpful, but what is overblown is the desire to do marathon style long distance running or the belief that it is helpful. If you look at an athlete who sprints versus an athlete that does marathon running – you will see the sprinter has a much more “athletic looking” physique.
That’s why if you’re looking to get in amazing […]

Tomato Garlic Mussels

After over a month of Primal Challenge festivities it feels good to get back in the kitchen and cook up some Primal fare for the regular weekend recipe post here at MDA. This and next week’s recipe will wrap up the Reader-Created Cookbook Contest. After that it we’ll be publishing exclusive MDA-created recipes every Saturday. But first, let’s dive straight into the sea…
The great thing about seafood is that it takes so little time to cook. Mussels are at the very top of the list, usually needing only a few minutes to steam open. Mussels conveniently announce exactly when they’re done by opening their shell, they are perfectly self-seasoned, have no bones to contend with and are high in protein, B12, iron and selenium. What is there not to love?

According to both the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch and the Environmental Defense Fund, mussels are farmed using environmentally sound methods […]

Five weeks ago, the J.J. Experiment (week 2, 3, 4) began. J.J. Valdivia, a personal trainer in Miami, guided ten people as they took a 30-Day Leap into a healthy lifestyle. Let’s find out how they did…

Dear Mark’s Daily Apple readers,
I can’t believe the 30 Day Challenge has come to an end! We had an amazing month and it all went by so fast. I’d like to express how proud I am of my Leapers and just what an honor it was to lead them through this journey. When the challenge began, I asked each one of them for 1000% percent of their effort. With the results I saw yesterday from the body fat tests and measurements, I know that that’s exactly what I received. Out of 8 leapers measured (2 are out of town on business), they lost a combined total of 118 lbs of fat, 143 inches, and […]

I’d like to thank the 28 groups who participated in the Grokfeast Challenge this year. Your level of creativity, commitment, and enthusiasm serves as a hallmark for Primal living at its best. It’s been an immense pleasure reading and posting your experiences on Mark’s Daily Apple.
As good as they all were, only one group can win the cow. One more shout out to US Wellness, who is donating all the grass-fed beef. If you ever want to take your beef eating to the next level, hit up their newsletter and join the grass-fed revolution.
While only one group can win the cow, I have decided to give the 27 contestants that don’t win this contest a special Primal prize. I just can’t leave them empty-handed after all the effort they put into their Grokfeasts. (I’ll be in touch with each of you in the next couple weeks to make arrangements.)
OK, now […]

Whether or not compound exercises or isolation exercises are better is a question that comes up often when trying to get in amazing shape. Depending on your goal, whether it be weight loss, muscle building, or just getting really fit – you’re going to want to know which kind of exercise is going to help you reach that goal in the fastest time possible. So which kind of exercise should you focus on? Well, let’s do a quick analysis…
First…What Compound Exercises Are
Compound exercises are exercises that target multiple muscles. With weights, the “big 3″ compound lifts for mass and functionality are deadlifts, squats, and bench presses since they all target multiple muscle groups. Any exercise that targets multiple muscle groups qualifies as a compound exercise.
What Isolation Exercises Are…
Any exercise that only targets one muscle group qualifies as an isolation exercise. Bicep curls and calf raises are good examples of this.
Compound […]

Grokfeast in New York City

On September 8th I asked my readers to host picnics and to send me the results. The following is one of 27 amazing submissions, the best of which will win an entire cow, courtesy of US Wellness. Vote for your favorite on October 8.
Eating Paleo in NYC, New York City’s paleo meetup group, decided that having an awesome feast with a chance to win a cow was a great idea. We gathered on a warm September Sunday in a lush meadow in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Everyone brought something delicious and primal to feast on, but before we ate we played outside.

Most of us were dressed appropriately with Vibrams or simply bare feet! Having our […]

To be honest I dreaded the coming of my 30th birthday. I wanted to celebrate, but I didn’t want to have a “normal” birthday party since Primal life I’d been living wasn’t really “normal” either. So why not host something that fits just a little bit better… like a Grokfeast with some Yard Game Olympics to keep things interesting.

Meat and veggies abounded as did the physical activity throughout the day. Our yard games included Washer Toss, Cornhole, […]
