Contest: Primal Iron Chef

The Prize:
A Vitamix! That’s right, a $500 blender.  I’ve had one of these for over ten years now, and the things hold up. Want to make your own salsa? Almond butter? Puree some veggies? Or maybe you just like to drink your steak. The Vitamix will liquefy pretty much anything. It’s the Bugatti of the blending world. Courtesy of Gail Goodwin from Inspire Me Today, the winner will receive a Vitamix Blender.
In addition to the blender, the winning entry will also be featured as Saturday’s blog post right here on MDA.
The Contest:
Cue the dramatic music, take a bite of your favorite vegetable, steel your fiery gaze at the audience, because it’s time to play Iron Chef: Primal Edition!!! (hold for applause). Reader Nate came up with the idea for this one. For anyone not familiar with the popular Japanese import cooking show, chefs are tasked with creating an assortment […]

With millions of people becoming more obese and overweight than ever worldwide, it’s no wonder that the weight loss industry is so incredibly massive. There are literally thousands of “experts” offering weight loss tips that promise to turn you you into a model, no matter how much you weigh now.

The truth is that most of these tips are harmless – and a lot of them are based on common sense and scientific studies that are actually extremely helpful. But a few of these tips are not only bad, but they can actually kill you.
Here are 5 popular weight loss tips that you really, really don’t want to follow:

#3.  ”Stay Away From Fat.”
One of the most common tips you will find in the diet industry is to “stay away from fat”. Apparently, this seems to be based on the advanced scientific belief that because the word for a type of nutrient […]

Contest: Caption This, Win Oils

The Prize:
There’s a little shop in Denver that sells some of the finest olive oils on the country. EVOO Marketplace is offering a gift basket of two top shelf olive oils and two balsamic vinegars to the winner of today’s contest. If you’re an olive oil connoisseur, check out some of their more intense flavors like black truffel and blood orange olive oils.
But the oils don’t stop with olives. Tropical Traditions is back with another offering of coconut oil and palm oil. A 32 oz. jar of each, that’s half a gallon of delicious, healthy, tropical fat. A special note, this palm oil comes from family farms in West Africa, not Southeast Asia, so you can use this stuff knowing orangutans aren’t being wiped out for the benefit of your taste buds.

Earlier in the challenge I asked people to pose like Grok.
Congrats to Stephen (right), who wins a bunch of bacon and a spear.
A big thanks to everyone who sent in a picture. I’ve posted them all below. What do you think, folks? Who hits the most accurate pose? The most creative? The most intense? I must say I’m impressed by them all.
Stay tuned. I’ll be publishing reader-created content all week long. Grok on!

Contest: What Do You Want?

The Prize:
Tanka Bars. Snack food made of buffalo. That’s pretty much all that needs saying. In the pursuit of quick-fix meat-chunk eats, Tanka is offering up a handful of Tanka Bars, Tanka Bites, and Tanka Wild Sticks to the winner of today’s post. BONUS: Enter “MARKSDAILYAPPLE” when ordering from TankaBar.com for a 15% discount off of regularly priced items.
YouBars. Energy bars can be nasty business. 95% of the energy bars on the market are simply candy bars re-branded for the cardio crowd. Heck, even Snickers has its own brand of energy bar which – big surprise – contains almost the exact same nutritional breakdown as a plain, old Snickers. What’s a Grok to do with so few Primal options?
Enter YouBar. Don’t like the options at your health food store? Why not make your own! YouBar is a family owned company that lets you design your own […]

The Perfect Primal Omelet

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack time. Hard boiled, scrambled, poached, fried. We’ll take eggs any time of day, any way you want to cook ‘em. But if we had our choice, the omelet just might be our favorite. Like an edible envelope that can be stuffed with anything you desire, an omelet is a quick and healthy way to satisfy hunger.  You really can’t go wrong when eating a meal based around such an excellent source of protein, choline, selenium and vitamin D.
Unless, of course, the thought of cooking an omelet makes you break into a cold sweat.

At one time or another, almost every cook has been defeated by an omelet that refused to un-stick from the pan or cook all the way through or stay snugly wrapped around its fillings. Like most things, practice makes perfect when it comes to omelets, which gives you another incentive to make them a […]

The J.J. Experiment: Week 3

Two weeks ago, the J.J. Experiment began (week 2). J.J. Valdivia, a personal trainer in Miami, is guiding ten people as they take a 30-Day Leap into a healthy lifestyle. Let’s find out how they’re doing…
My fellow Grok and Grokettes,
It was a busy week for myself and the Leapers. Last Friday, I was joined by Mike and Georgina for a quick bodyweight session at Body Waves. They performed two sets of maximum repetitions of each of the Primal movements, and they were back at their desk before you could say “Power Bar.”

I then joined Elaine, Thor, and my boss Kim for a “Primal Feast” lunch outside of our offices in beautiful downtown Miami. Elaine munched on left over rib eye and salmon with veggies from the night before. Thor and I packed our “Big Ass Salads” and Kim foraged the cafeteria […]

Contest: Name a Blog, Win a Bag

Stay tuned for the third installment of the J.J. Experiment.
The Prize:
A Sandbag. The unwieldy lump of heavy. I’ve been using one of these sandbags since I featured them a year ago. Mine has taken some real abuse and has yet to show a tear. Courtesy of Henkin Fitness, the winner of today’s contest will receive his or her choice of the Burly, Strength, Challenge, or Power packages which includes the heavy duty sandbag plus ebooks, training videos, a fundamentals DVD, and a poster. As for the hardcore Primal Groks, sure you could use an actual carcass for your strength training, but sandbags smell better and keep longer.

The Contest:
Mark’s Daily Apple isn’t the only source of information when it comes to Primal health and fitness. There’s a growing community of like-minded folks blogging their experiences, recipes, information, and advice. Today, I want you to share what you read.  In the comments […]

A shocking claim has been made that 75% of Americans will be overweight by 2020 causing concerns about the general level of health in the U.S. in the not so distant future.
Obesity in the U.S. has been a problem for years, and despite the fitness revolution and tons great weight loss programs it doesn’t seem to be getting any better, and in fact – seems to be getting worse. The problem is especially hard to solve because as many people reading Passionate Fitness can attest to, simple lifestyle changes like dieting and exercise solve the problem.
So the question becomes – if the “cure” to obesity is known, and people still for whatever reason, refuse to make changes to their life whether because of lack of awareness or lack of ability…
Then what more can be done to help people learn about healthy living and to prevent obesity in the U.S. and the […]
