I’m not sure if you already knew this, but next weekend I’m entering my first power lifting contest in well over a decade.
I’m going to try to lose a couple pounds in order to ’sneak’ in to a lower weight class.
When I told a friend I was going to try and drop 5 pounds she replied:
“FIVE pounds of FAT? Can you even do that in a week??”
Now truth be told, I’m not planning on dropping 5 pounds of fat…I’m just going to do the contest fasted.
But it raises a good question…could I drop 5 pounds of pure body fat in a week if I had to?
Time for some rough math.
I’ve got about 150-155 pounds of lean mass…that puts my resting metabolic rate at roughly 1,800 Calories.
Add in my AVERAGE daily exercise and movement and I might get to 2,500 Calories being burned in a day…if I’m lucky.

In this article I wrote about a study that showed an anabolic rebound effect during feeding after fasted weight training. The title of that article ended with a question mark, since it was a (very) short term study with results that were far from conclusive in regards to fasted training being superior to fed state training.
However, when it comes to endurance training, there’s compelling evidence showing that fasted state training is superior, or complementary, to fed state training.
Now, for those of you that has no interest whatsoever in endurance training, bear with me. At the end of this article I will discuss how fasted state weight training may provide additional benefits, not discussed before, based on some new findings.

I got a ton of feedback from my series on joint mobility. As comprehensive as I tried to be in my joint mobility series, I couldn’t possibly address every single malady a person might have. In the comment sections, readers discussed their own specific issues with joint mobility or joint pain, and while I hope my general recommendations for overall mobility helped, more targeted, specific advice is needed for targeted, specific issues. Smart Spice: Turmeric

It may not share cinnamon’s universal applicability to consumables, but turmeric is another spice with some powerful culinary and medicinal qualities that deserves our attention. Turmeric, known officially as Curcuma longa and historically as Indian saffron, is a rhizome of the ginger family. Its horizontal root system is dug up, baked, and ground into a fine orange powder, which then goes into any number of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Southeast Asian dishes. Pretty much every curry you come across anywhere, for example, includes a generous portion of turmeric. Common yellow mustard also includes turmeric, mostly as a food colorant.

Muay Thai

Just a brief reminder : All regularly scheduled classes for Saturday, May 29th are cancelled. You may have seen the signs and notices up around the gym, but just in case you missed them, Saturday we are having a Muay Thai clinic followed by a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu seminar.
The Muay Thai clinic will kick off at 8:30 AM and run until 10 AM. After a brief half hour break, the BJJ class will begin at 10:30 and end at noon. The cost is $30 for the day, and the event is open to guests and members alike. The Muay Thai class will be taught by Johnny Ward and Carlos Rodriguez. The BJJ class is being taught by Michael Nunes.
