Just some random stuff I’ve either discussed or thought about in the last few days.

1. The deadlift is poorly suited to a high training frequency. I’ve never derived any benefit from training the lift more than once per week; and even that is pushing it in terms of recovery if I’m squatting heavy within that same week. Generally speaking, I’ve had my best deadlift-sessions while training the no more than once every 8-12th day.
2. When increasing the weight for a movement, you need to pay attention to the percentage increase in load. This may seem like common sense, but people are prone to ignore it and only think of the increase in terms of poundage. Back when I was a kid, I had 4 types of taste buds: Sweet, Salty, Sour & Bitter
And then, they discovered that I (we) actually had a fifth taste bud specifically for savory foods like meat, cheese & mushrooms. This taste is commonly referred to as Umami (fun fact – in Japanese, umami means flavor or taste.)
And because they can’t leave well enough alone, some researchers in Australia have recently discovered a sixth form of taste.

Here is something that I think a lot of people overlook in their quest to lose body fat:
There is a major difference between BURNING Fat and LOSING fat.
Burning fat involves using your body fat as a fuel.
However this does NOT guarantee that you are losing body fat…

This is a common misconception.
If you are eating more than you need to, the fat your burned simply gets replaced by new fat.
That’s a WHOLE LOT of work, for ZERO results.
LOSING fat is just that, you burn body fat, AND you don’t replace it.
So they are very similar but they are NOT the same thing.
Lots of things can cause you to BURN more fat without guaranteeing you LOSE body fat.
Exercise comes to mind.
Think of all the claims you read:
“Burn 5 times more fat!”
“Increase fat burning by 120%!!”
They don’t really tell you that you will actually LOSE fat.  (It’s just implied.)

There’s a lot to be said for mastering basic cooking techniques like properly grilling a steak, plain and simple. Here I’ve done just that yet to spice things up I roasted cauliflower with a little kick using smoked paprika. This might sound too basic but this is where choosing your ingredients makes all the difference. Grass-fed meats and organic produce are bursting with natural flavour. Delicious doesn’t have to mean complicated.
RECIPE:
2 x 6oz NY grass-fed steaks
1 tsp cracked black pepper (1/2 tsp per steak)
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp grape seed oil (or olive oil if preferred). Grape seed oil gets to a higher temp before burning so is ideal for searing on high heat.
1 head organic cauliflower – cut in florets
1/4 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 cup green olives – halved
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tbsp olive oil
drizzle agave or honey

I have just spent the past hour jumping around to some of my favorite fitness blogs. A few guys touch on the idea of gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time. A common practice in some circles is to "bulk up and cut down". I'm not a fan of that approach, because it just doesn't make sense to me to put fat on your body on purpose. What I want to do in this post is point out a few fitness experts who have similar beliefs. I also want to hear feedback from other people who have successfully or unsuccessfully gained muscle while getting lean.

P90X and CrossFit

Nearly every day I get emails from readers about P90X and CrossFit. Most are favorable, some not so much, but mostly, people just want to know if these fitness programs fit within the context of the Primal Blueprint Fitness methodology. I love interval training.
Absolutely love it.
There is something magical about the HIIT, HIRT and Tabata workouts that I inflict upon my clients.
As the clock counts down, they move quicker, lift heavier and recover faster.
Whether it’s bike sprints…

or jumping lunges…

…interval training is a powerful tool for burning fat and getting really, really fit, really, really fast.
So, how do you get started with interval training?
Glad you asked.
Step One:  Buy an Interval Timer.
Seriously, you’ll thank me. No more watching the clock out of the corner of your eye or screaming at your workout buddy for not paying attention. Spend the 20 bucks. Buy a Gymboss interval timer. Clip it to your shorts. It will beep & vibrate to let you know when to start & stop.
Simple. Effective. Buy the damn timer.
