According to the latest research, emphasising the emotional benefits of exercise is more effective at increasing levels of (teenage) physical activity than highlighting traditional health benefits.
Or, to put it in layman’s terms…
Teens like to do fun stuff
They don’t like to do stuff that is “good for them”
Well….duh!
.
But seriously, there is evidence showing that people who believe that physical activity is enjoyable and fun are more likely to engage in sport and exercise.
To test this concept, researchers investigated whether highlighting the emotional benefits of sport and exercise to young people increased their levels of physical activity.”
The Study
To test their hypothesis, the researchers sent different types of SMS messages to kids (ages 16-19) encouraging them to “get active”.
Group 1 received messages that highlighted the emotional benefits of physical activity such as ‘Physical activity can make you feel cheerful. What activity will you do today?’ and ‘Physical activity can make you feel more […]

Yes, I just used a terrible joke as the title of this post. I wanted to discuss a bit about building size in the arms, but couldn't get myself to write a "how to" title. Let's discuss what it takes to build bigger arms. Despite what many would suggest, I believe beginners need to mix in isolation work to get the most "arm building power" out of the heavier compound movements.
[Insert your bad “Tickets to the Gun Show” joke here.]
Bench Presses Build Triceps and Chin Ups Build Biceps?
No doubt that various presses will build up your triceps and various pulling exercises like chin ups or rows will build your biceps. This is especially true once you have a strong mind-to-muscle link to these muscle groups from yeas of lifting. Most experts recommend that beginners stick to compound movements and avoid arm specialization. My argument against this approach is that a […]

Franco/Farmer team got the bronze medal
While most of us were busy worrying about what to buy to our loved ones, over 100 competitors gathered in Downtown Manteo to participate in the Sweetheart 8K Race this Valentines Day weekend.
The race covered approximately 5 miles, and the temperature sure didnt help. In the freezing cold, with wind blowing and flakes of snow starting to fall, KnuckleUp Bootcampers put their hard training to test and came out extremely successful.
This run took them through “romantic” downtown Manteo and benefited The Dare County Food Pantry at Mt. Olivet Church.
Here are Team KnuckleUp’s results:
Jay Bowman – 1st Place.
Shelley Tolbert and Cheryl Wiggins – 2nd Place.
Team Matt Costa and Ariadna Vucinovic – 2nd Place.
Team Kathy Farmer and Franco Mineo – 3rd Place.

Regina Benjamin, the United States’ 18th Surgeon General, is markedly overweight. She’s a highly trained physician who famously set up a medical clinic for Alabama’s poor hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina, and she’s unquestionably knowledgeable and experienced, but she’s also overweight. Does this negatively impact her role as the public face of health? Does her weight detract from the message?
Or take countless nutrition experts that fit the mold of the dietitian featured in this video? She’s educated, has dozens of books on nutrition and healthy cooking under her belt and, at least on paper, looks like an authority of sorts. But her physique (saying nothing of her healthy eating tips) doesn’t exactly instill confidence in her recommendations (as readers noted in the forum).
On the other hand what about someone like Jillian Michaels? Strong shoulders. Check. Trim waistline and ripped abs. Check and check. She must be doing things right? Right?

A little over a month ago, I introduced my Health Habits online personal training service….
…and I can’t believe how successful it’s been.
.
Each new client has achieved noticeable results (weight loss, strength gains, improved endurance, lower heart rate and blood pressure) after just a few weeks.
I couldn’t be happier….or more relieved.
Because, if I am being completely honest, I have to admit that I was a little bit worried about doing online training.
I was worried that because my online clients wouldn’t be getting the same “hands on” type of attention that my face to face clients get, they might not get the same quality of results.
And, my (slightly overinflated) ego wouldn’t be happy with half-assed training results. I built my training business solely on word of mouth and a mild case of OCD when it comes to designing and implementing training programs.
.
Now I am kicking myself for not doing this sooner.
.
So, as […]

The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise we'll use sprints as an example here.
Sprint as hard as you can for 20 seconds
Walk for 10 seconds
Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets.
So what you have is a total of 4 minutes workout time.
Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises the idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with Barbells, Dumbells, Kettlebells or just Bodyweight exercises. I'll give you some other exercises and routines to try in a minute but first let me give you some background and how Tabatas work.
Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata (imagine that) at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study on […]

A glassful of raw eggs incites mixed reactions for many of us. It’s routine for some and revulsion for others. Commonly associated with bodybuilders and boxers (the Rocky scene) who want to bulk up, a lot of folks who fit neither category include them on a regular basis for simple nutritional reasons. However, there’s more to the picture, as this reader’s email suggests.
Dear Mark,
I have searched the site to see if there is any pros/cons of eating raw eggs. I know in the past, CW says that eating raw eggs can create a biotin deficiency in our bodies. I like having a couple of raw eggs in my whey protein drink after a workout. Do you have any information that would be helpful in the use of raw eggs?
Eggs in general are a nutritional (and wholly Primal!) powerhouse with impressive supplies of selenium, iodine, phosphorus, molybdenum, choline, lutein, […]
