In part one of this article series I covered the basics of water retention. This time I’ll list a few effective tricks that will help you deal with it when and if it occurs. Don’t worry, you won’t be sweating it out in a sauna and sucking on ice cubes. These are all simple and non-intimidating strategies that don’t require a whole lot of thinking. They can be used in isolation or in combination.
Reduce sodiumThe most common reason people hold water is due to shifts in sodium balance. Going from a low baseline intake of sodium to sudden and high intakes can have dramatic effects on your visual appearance (which any bodybuilding-competitor can attest to). Conversely, reducing sodium can have the opposite effect and cause water loss. This is all about relative and not absolute numbers; it’s not high sodium per se that cause water retention/water loss, but deviations from […]

I want you to imagine that you’re the parent of this chubby little guy chowing down at Mickey Dees.

You know that your kid is obese.
You know that being obese is not going to make his life easier in any respect – health, social stigma, etc

And yet, here you are at McDonalds…again
How does that make you feel?

Like a failure as a parent?
Worried about your kid’s health?
Concerned that you don’t know how to fix the problem?
Upset that you can’t afford to fix the problem?

.
What if there was a program that:

Has been proven to help reverse childhood obesity (study, study)
Teaches kids (and their families) what & how they should be eating to be fit
Takes the family shopping to show them how to shop for healthy food on a budget
Shows the family how to prepare healthy meals
Teaches the family psychological tips to help them improve their odds of winning the weight loss battle
Re-introduces kids […]

In a study published last year, researchers wanted to see if a Paleo-style diet would be helpful to Type 2 Diabetics.
The study included 13 patients with type 2 diabetes (3 women & 10 men)
Over two consecutive 3 month periods, the test subjects ate either:

A Paleolithic diet based on lean meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, root vegetables, eggs and nuts, or
A Diabetes diet designed in accordance with dietary guidelines

Researchers looked at numerous variables to determine the effectiveness of both diets. These variables included:

changes in weight,
waist circumference,
serum lipids,
C-reactive protein,
blood pressure,
glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c),
and areas under the curve for plasma glucose and plasma insulin in the 75 g oral glucose tolerance test.

At the end of the study, the Paleo diet produced superior results in the following variables:

lower levels of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c)
lower levels of triacylglycerol
lower diastolic blood pressure
lower body-weight
lower BMI
lower waist circumference
and higher mean values of high density lipoprotein cholesterol

CONCLUSION:
Over a 3-month study period, […]

On January 1st, I asked readers to videotape themselves making Primal Blueprint New Year’s Resolutions. Folks wrote poems, made their own Grok shirts, and even threw away all their sugar products on camera. Nearly 40 people submitted videos; below are a few highlights…

You can watch individual entries here on YouTube, or here on Vimeo.
I’d like to thank everyone who participated. It’s always a pleasure to add faces to the voices in the Primal community. I’d love to be able to give a grand prize to each and every participant, but this time around there is only one grand prize for one lucky winner. Without further ado, the winner of the contest is…

Aaron R.!
Aaron wins over $700 in Primal goodies including a mobile pull up bar, 18 pounds of grass fed beef, YouBars, dark chocolate, resistance bands, salad dressings, magnesium bath flakes, coconut oil, and coconut flour. Check out the original […]

Effective, healthy weight loss isn’t only due to the simplistic calories in, calories out paradigm. Nor is it solely reliant on diet and exercise. It’s everything – it’s all the various signals our body receives from the environment that affect how our genes express themselves and thrive. How we approach the subject matters, too. Our mood, our methods, our temperament. Our conscious decisions and our willpower. It’s setting good habits and expunging bad ones. Most of all, it comes down to keeping our genes happy by providing an environment that approximates evolutionary precedent.

1. You think you’re eating healthy, but aren’t.
Does your diet consist of a massive amount of “products”? Low-carb or not, you want to eat real food. Flagons of diet soda, plates of pure fiber in the shape of noodles, and loaves of 1g net carb “bread” do not a Primal diet make. You’re just feeding an addiction and […]

The Secret of Senior Fitness

The diet/weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar business.
So is the healthcare industry…
and the pharmaceutical industry…
and the health insurance biz.
Billions and billions and billions and billions.
In contrast, the amount of money being spent on health promotion and disease prevention last year in the United States was $11.78.
But, that’s okay.
Because, according to a group of studies published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers have identified a low cost solution that “not only helps maintain good health, but may even prevent the onset of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and dementia”.
And considering that the Baby Boomers have begun to enter their senior years, senior citizen health & fitness is about to become a major social & economic driver in the coming years.
So, we have to decide:

Do we want to spend billions & billions attempting to treat the symptoms of heart disease, dementia, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, alzheimers….?
Or do […]

NOTE: Make sure to checkout the forum discussion for this article.
How to put on weight and gain muscle mass is currently the #1 question that I get asked by young guys who can’t seem to break out of being “too skinny”.
Here’s the answer that I always give:
Eat more than you’re eating now, and eat plenty of protein.
That’s it.
The response I get to this is also always the same. “I can’t gain weight because my metabolism is off the charts. No matter how much I eat I can’t gain weight.”
Then I ask them what they eat, and it almost always turns out that either 1) They’re not eating as much as they think they’re eating or 2) They have no idea how much big guys eat.
So if you’re looking to gain weight, it’s time to start eating, and it’s time to start eating a lot. If you add 500 more […]

The Truth About Anti-Aging

I’ve been trying to put into words what I learned at this past Septembers SENS conference (Big Anti-Aging conference) for months.
It has been unbelievably difficult to capture everything in one blog post.
Thankfully, I just read a blog post by John Barban that did this perfectly (John was at the conference with me)
This is definitely worth a read, it’s one that will make you think.
