Attention all overweight people of the planet Earth.
Your days of struggling with obesity & dieting are finally over.
Taco Bell is here to free you from your bonds of corpulence.
Forget about their infamous Fourth Meal or their 990 calorie Volcano Nachos or their 900 calorie Chicken Ranch Taco Salad or their 640 calorie Grilled Stuft Steak Burrito.
Forget about all of that stuff. None of that matters anymore.
Because, Taco Bell has decided to kick Jared’s butt and become America’s Weight Loss Champion.
And they’re going to do it with their new Drive-Thru Diet.

Hmmm…what do you think of that?  54 pounds is nothing to sneeze at. Maybe they’re onto something.
Let’s hear some more about the Drive-Thru Diet

Sounds great, doesn’t it?
But before we make up our minds, maybe we should get the opinion of a medical expert…

Hmmm, now I’m confused.
Maybe, we should hear from an actual Taco Bell customer…

That was interesting.
The morbidly obese Taco Bell […]

“Always start beginners with body weight exercises”
Sounds good in theory…However something just dawned on me…
More precisely, something nearly crushed me.
I was just in my basement doing a workout consisting mostly of weighted pushups.
I had about 100 pounds of chain wrapped around me and I was struggling to get ten good solid reps.
Then it dawned on me – I weight 175 pounds, with the chain I weigh 275 pounds.
So this crushing feeling I have of BARELY making it to ten reps on my third set..this would be what simple BODY WEIGHT push-ups would feel like to a man or women who weighs 275 pounds.
SO WHY WOULD YOU EVER START AN OBESE PERSON ON BODY WEIGHT EXERCISES?
Just doesn’t make sense to me.
A good guideline but NOT a rule
I’m OK with average weight or slightly heavy people starting with body weight work, but use some common sense.
If you are more than 50 or […]

NOTE: Make sure to checkout the forum discussion on this developing series of articles called The Simple Guide to Getting into Shape.

In the last article, Introduction to Fitness, we talked a little about the history of fitness, the evolution of fitness, and why fitness is important. Now we’re going to discussing the basics of fitness and how to go about getting into shape. This article is going to focus on the importance of proper planning, knowing your goals, and executing a plan.
The Runner Analogy
A young guy named Jack was interested in training to run a marathon. The problem was that Jack had no idea what it took to train to run a marathon, so he just started doing things that he thought would get him “in shape”.
He did pullups, pushups, situps, and even started weight lifting. All of his friends had commented how much better he looked and […]

You can’t watch the news today without hearing about the “obesity epidemic”.
In fact, recent research has shown that obesity is a bigger health threat than smoking.
But wait, it gets worse.
Now, we learn that our lifestyle has lead to an unprecedented increase in the rates of  Type 1 Diabetes.

According to medical journalist Dan Hurley, “the incidence of type 1 diabetes is now twice as high among children as it was in the 1980s, and 10 to 20 times more common than 100 years ago.”

While rising levels of type 2 diabetes are well known (and typically linked to increasing obesity), the corresponding rise in type 1, or “juvenile,” diabetes has rarely if ever been described in the news media, despite a substantial body of scientific evidence.
While widely accepted by leading diabetes researchers, the increase in type 1 has as yet received scant attention from leading diabetes advocacy organizations.

Scant attention???
I had no idea […]

If you believe the ads, we live in a squalid hotbed of menacing microbes. Evil germs are everywhere and out to get us – especially the innocent, well-dressed children playing nearby. The smart ones among us, the marketers tell us, navigate this ominous world armed with the right sanitizing defense. Even the grimiest restroom, the ad images show, can become as innocuous as a sparkling, surgery-ready space if we only have the security of hand sanitizer. Yes, the power of the imagination…

Sure, the marketing gurus make their buck by coaxing rampant, misplaced fear in the populace. (Funny how we don’t seem as terrified by a “Biggie” order of French fries as we do our own door knobs.) However, let’s put aside the cautionary ads and look at the facts. Sales have risen some 70% since last year. Part of it is the whole H1N1 alarm, but it’s a general trend […]

I was going back over the MDA archives this week, thinking about what went right and what went wrong with past posts. There are always going to be regrets when looking at past work, whatever its nature. That’s just how these things work.
But this is the internets, not print, and I can quickly hop in and make changes to the past with just a few keystrokes. Or, I can write an honest appraisal of my previous transgressions and come up with a post of restitution. This is that post of restitution. Today, I’m admitting that my last post on cowpooling was a bit lean. It’s not that I trimmed the fat; it’s that the fat was never even there in the first place (hmm, old Cordain might agree). Consider this post a dollop of grass fed butter in the pan that is MDA’s cowpooling content, perhaps even after deglazing all […]

I thought you might enjoy the conversation I had over the holidays. Great questions from Andrew who really helped me spell out my theories on muscle building.
BP
………
Hey Brad, I’m a big lover of Eat Stop Eat, and a massive proponent of many of your thoughts and theories, so don’t take any of this as confrontational or second guessing in nature, I just wondered which variables you would manipulate in order to gain LBM most effectively whilst following the ESE lifestyle?
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure I’ve seen you comment that you don’t believe eating much above your BMR is necessary, neither is excessive protein intake or mega dosing your peri-workout nutrition. So I guess my real question is, if you HAD TO gain say 5-10lbs of skeletal muscle as quickly as possible, naturally, and assuming you’re already training using a program with built in progressive overload, which […]

There’s a new weapon in the battle against obesity, anorexia and bulimia.
It’s called the Mandometer.
It was developed in 2003 by researchers at the Karolinska Institute to test their theory that restrictive eating behaviors cause psychological disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, etc).

The Mandometer: A device that teaches you how to eat
Here’s how it works:

Mandometer® consists of a scale that is connected to a computer.

You place your plate on the scale and put food on the plate. The computer registers the decrease in the weight of the plate over the course of the meal and in real time shows a curve for your eating speed in grams per minute. At regular intervals, a satiety scale is shown on the computer screen and you are asked to evaluate your satiety by pointing at the screen.
The computer saves the satiety evaluations and generates another curve that shows your feelings of satiety during the meal […]
