See Some Warriors Sweatin’ It Uuupp!

Two guys gain the same amount of muscle over a 6 month period of time. Both guys are exactly 6'3", 190 pounds and both are at the exact same body fat level. They both put on 6 pounds of muscle in 6 months, yet one guy looks outstanding and the other looks almost visibly the same as he did 6 months earlier. How can this be? How can two guys be at the same low body fat level and put on the same amount of muscle and look drastically different?

[Here is an outstanding example of muscle density. Notice how this athlete has compact, dense and an angular look to his muscles? This is much different that the typical rounded puffy bodybuilding look. This angular compact look is much more impressive than big and bulky.]

Peri-Workout Nutrition

Back in the olden days, workout nutrition consisted of a quick run to the water fountain between exercises.
Then came Gatorade.
Then, we were introduced to the magic 20 minute post-workout window of time.
We were told that if we chugged down a  carb/protein shake immediately after working out, we would:

Shift our metabolism from a catabolic state (muscle damaging) to an anabolic state (muscle building) .
Reduce post exercise muscle soreness
Get bigger, stronger, leaner, faster, etc…

And there was (and still is) a lot of scientific research to back up this belief.
As a result, every gym put in a “smoothie bar” and we all chugged down some pretty gross post-workout protein shakes.
But wait, it doesn’t end there, we’re just getting started.
Researchers began to study whether pre-workout carb/pro nutrition might be even more efficient than post-workout carb/pro nutrition.
And their research showed that it was.
As a result, instead of one post-workout shake, I was now drinking half […]

Building more muscle…

Building more Muscle.
Considering some of the things happening in the news today, I thought this was timely. Biggest mistake we make with regards to building muscle is false expectations of what is actually possible.
Hi Brad!
I read almost every article u wrote, and your view is very impressive.
But I have 1 question (maybe off topic, sorry)
You say the amount of protein is not so important, the quality of the food is not so important (ok avoid crap), 2-3 workout per week is enough to keep or build muscle.
What is then the mistake what most of the average  gym rat make?
Ok we can see some real life example like you, but every competitive bodybuilder use (or they lie) the old method (6-8 meals, lot of protein above 300 grams, lot of training, cardio everyday) and not only for the end of the preparation, but from the beginning.

Hey Wood,
The average gym rat makes […]

10 Really Good Diet Hacks

For today’s post, we’re keeping it simple. Here are…
10 Really Good Diet Hacks
diet weight loss fitness health
1.    Eat a Big Breakfast
……Your grandma was right. Studies have shown that eating a big breakfast helps reduce hunger ……and promotes weight loss.
fitness
2.   Macronutrient Timing
……Eat low fat/ high protein/moderate carb meals in the morning – fruit smoothies with protein ……powder, oatmeal with cinnamon, raisins & protein powder, grilled chicken fruit salad
……Eat low carb/high protein/moderate fat meals in the evening – soups, salads, stir frys, etc…lots ……of veggies (the crunchy kind) but no grains
……Lunch can go either way.
……Part of the theory behind macronutrient timing is that carbs are used for energy. As your day ……winds down, your need for carbs is reduced. And if you’re not burning carbs for energy, the will ……turn to fat.
……So, if your afternoon is going to require lots of energy, opt for a carb/pro meal. If your afternoon […]

Bootcamp lead instructor Matt Costa just released the official dates for the Winter Fitness Bootcamp.
Here are the dates:
Winter Bootcamp Starts: December 29th
Time: Tuesdays – 5:30am till 7am
Thursdays – 5:45am till 7am
Bootcamp Ends: February 11th, 2010
Matt’s bootcamp training has created the most impressive results in each one of its participants. Almost all of the bootcampers completed the Outer Banks 1/2 Marathon in close to 2 hours – Reverend Jay Bowman actually ran the full marathon.
But the most impressive results came Monday, less than 48hours after the Marathon was finished: the entire class showed up for class without whining – they were ready for more!
The bootcamp is now famous for not only getting people in shape, but incorporating fitness and well being into their daily lives.

Dear Mark: Canola Oil

I get a lot of questions about differentiating fact from fiction when it comes to all the “healthy” labels out there. Spanning everything from “heart healthy” to “boost your child’s immunity,” these classic marketing ploys are just part and parcel for the food industry. And yet these companies wouldn’t get away with the games if their claims didn’t reflect conventional wisdom on some level. The industry’s marketing tactics simply manipulate already strained, twisted messages about health and nutrition. The consumer is left to wonder what’s truth, half truth and bold-face scheme. Unfortunately, it’s never safe to judge a product by its label. In fact, if it needs a label at all, it’s already subject to questioning. The safest assumption is this: there’s always more to the story.

Dear Mark,
I’ve been adapting my diet to the Primal Blueprint over the last few months. I like olive oil for salads but […]
