Did you know that it’s only 32 days until Christmas, 23 days until Hanukkah and 30 days until that most glorious of holidays…Festivus?
Have you finished all of your holiday shopping?
Have you picked out your Festivus pole?
Have you prepared your list of grievances?
No?
Well, you came to the right place.
Over the next few days, I will be posting some of my Health Habits approved™ holiday gift giving solutions for those near and dear to your heart.
Today, I am starting with one of my favorite fitness training books.
Never Let Go by Dan John

In the world of strength training, Dan John is a breath of fresh air.
Where other strength gurus design overly complex training programs in an attempt to impress their peers, Dan writes programs that are simple enough for a beginner to understand.
But, don’t let that simplicity give you the wrong impression.
While they are easy to understand, Dan’s training programs are based upon […]

Fitness, health, and dieting is a multi-billion dollar industry, so it’s no surprise that there are countless infomercials trying to promote products and fitness centers. That being said, whenever you have that many infomercials, chances are there are going to be a few that really stand out…in a weird way. Here are the top 5 most awkward fitness infomercials to hit the airwaves, courtesy of Passionate Fitness:
5. Practical Fitness. In this infomercial, it looks like the writers started with a good joke, didn’t know where to go with it, and then hit their deadline so just sent it out. It starts with a guy asking his girlfriend what she wants from him, then a guy in amazing shape walks by to her staring at him at which point she replies, “I just want you to be healthy.”
Yes, we get it, at this point, it’s sort of a cute joke. She’s […]

Every week, I get a bunch of emails from readers.
And every week, I am blown away by the quality and depth of your questions, comments, observations and criticisms.
And, as much as I enjoy reading those emails, I think it’s a shame that the rest of the Health Habits readers don’t get to join in the discussion. I think that we could get much more out of Health Habits if there was more interaction between all of us.
Because of this, I have been looking at ways of  making Health Habits more “social”.
Here’s what I am thinking of doing:

Setting up a facebook page/group page for Health Habits
Setting up a twitter group for Health Habits (currently 75 people have added me to their list)
Setting up a separate community site using Ning or SocialGo
Or testing out this new WordPress plugin that would allow us to set up a social network right on the blog.

All […]

Workout Tunes #1

Music can be a powerful workout tool.
Especially on days when I just don’t feel like working out.
These are the days when I throw on the headphones and listen to a little Rage Against The Machine.
Nothing gets the blood pumping like Rage.

The videos will be available free either here or on KnuckleUp OBX YouTube channel.
On the first video, master Kazeka shows a fundamental Brazilian Jiu Jitsu movement called the Grambi Roll:

On the second video, master Muniz demonstrates the famous Mata Leao choke (the rear naked choke):

Thanksgiving is only a few days away and in the United States this means one thing: turkey. No other foods seems to dominate a holiday like this large bird and the mind-boggling demand (an estimated 45 million turkeys are eaten for Thanksgiving) has created some unsavory practices amongst turkey producers.
Beginning in the 1960s grocery stores started selling a breed of bigger, plumper turkeys known as Broad-Breasted Whites. This turkey is bred for one main reason: it’s cheap to raise, primarily because it’s genetically modified to grow quickly. Turkey producers can maximize their profits and provide what they think consumers want: birds with more white meat. But the thing is, all that white meat makes a turkey cook and taste different. In fact, it is probably Broad-Breasted Whites (not your mother’s cooking skills) that are to blame for decades of dry, flavorless Thanksgiving turkeys. Even worse than dry meat, the genetic […]

Gobble Gobble (as the actress said to the bishop). It’s Turkey time! If you saw my turkey post recently you’ll now know what type of turkey you should be getting as we know there’s going to be lots eaten over the next month or so. There will be soups, sandwiches, stews, stocks, casseroles and God knows what else we can think to make with Mr. Turkey. Salting, roasting, brining–each American family has their own style to cook the bird. But what if your family is small and you’d rather not cook an entire turkey? I’ve got you covered!
I’ve made stuffed turkey breasts before (here and here) but for this recipe I wanted to give you the idea of stuffing the breast with something a bit more out of the ordinary yet still in keeping with Thanksgiving flavours. Guess you could say it’s a modern twist on the classic turkey & […]

20 Nov 2009 A Little Intermittent Fasting Research Permalink|View Comments (0)|Post Comment|Share|Posted by ReasonLoading…The dominant topic for this past week of posts was the beneficial biochemistry of eating less; changes to gene expression and metabolism, enhanced health and extended longevity. That wasn’t an intentional choice – it just worked out that way as various items caught my eye. All the same, why not round it off with an paper on intermittent fasting research, noticed by the folk who keep sci.life-extension stocked.Intermittent fasting and calorie restriction are two ways of reducing your calorie intake to obtain health benefits.

This is a quick highlight of yesterday’s evening class with Head Instructor Chris Stolzman drilling everybody on open guard passes. Notice the nice “cartwheel” that Morrison Butler (white Gi, brown belt) pulls on Leo Saraceni (blue gi, blue belt).
Below you’ll see the first two videos of an exclusive KnuckleUp Fitness series with Head Instructor Kazeka – these two relate jiu jitsu and self-defense in 2 escapes from the good-old Headlock:
The first video shows how to defend a headlock choke

And the second video shows how to keep from being punched in the face and defend the headlock.

We’ve got a ton of videos from master Kazeka coming up soon – just as we have a ton of videos of Chris Stolzman’s classes coming up soon as well.
Our Outer Banks jiu jitsu class has been filling up almost every day, and we’ll soon start an advanced class, according to instructor Stolzman’s criteria.
Stay tuned […]
