Curried Split Pea Soup

Peas are one of my favorite vegetables. Probably because I grew up on mushy peas (an Irish delicacy). When in season fresh peas are a delight but in winter months dried split peas come in handy. They’re not only convenient since they don’t require soaking, but they’re also high in nutrients and low in fat and calories.
If you are concerned about coconut milk, turns out it’s gotten a bad rap over the years. The saturated fat content in coconut milk has been shown in independent studies to be an easily metabolized good saturated fat, which means it does not transform into bad cholesterol, clogging up arteries. Using light coconut milk cuts the calories and fat by more than half, paving the way to a delicious healthy meal.

Is there anything more comforting on a chilly autumn evening than a bowl of soup? It warms the body and the soul, especially when the broth is infused with aromatic, slightly spicy ginger. Ginger has long been thought to be a natural immune booster. With flu season on the horizon, homemade soup with ginger broth is exactly what your body needs. Health benefits aside, an even better reason to make Ginger Soup with Scallops and Shrimp is that it’s darn tasty.
Homemade stock will make the best-tasting soup and if you take time to fill your freezer with chicken stock now, you’ll be thanking yourself all winter. Once you have stock, it only takes a few minutes to infuse the flavor and healing properties of fresh ginger root into it. Ginger adds an intensity of flavor to stock that is both soothing and invigorating. It awakens your senses and warms you […]

How to Beat The Sugar Addiction

Most of you who are reading this are aware that sugar is bad for you. You’re also aware that most likely, you get plenty of sugar just by eating the healthy foods you like. You may not know that the American Heart Association has said that sugar is “associated with risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, high levels of triglycerides, and high levels of C-reactive protein, which has been linked to oxidative stress and inflammation”, but you do know that your body doesn’t feel good when you consume a lot of sugar.

[The guy who made this animation has done a lot of really well made and hilarious animations. It’s amazing how much talent some people have!]
There’s one problem though. Despite knowing that sugar is bad for you…you can’t stop. You can’t bring yourself to go without putting sugar in your coffee in the morning, or stop yourself from […]

How Much Rest Between Sets?

You design your own workouts.
You specify your reps and sets.
You modify your lifting tempo and your range of motion.
But, what about rest between sets?

Do you wait only long enough to catch your breath?
Or do you camp out underneath the squat rack having a nice long chat with your neighbor doing deadlifts?

Do you have any idea how long you should be resting between sets?
Well, according to the latest research, “the rest interval between sets is an important variable that affects both acute (short term) responses and chronic (long term) adaptations to resistance exercise programmes”.
The Study
Researchers reviewed 35 studies in which they examined both acute responses and chronic adaptations, with rest interval length as the experimental variable.
In terms of acute responses, a key finding was that when training with loads between 50% and 90% of one repetition maximum, 3-5 minutes’ rest between sets allowed for greater repetitions over multiple sets. Furthermore, in […]

A few years ago I decided to visit a few fitness forums to give helpful advice. Unfortunately back then, there were only two types, hardcore bodybuilding forums or extremely generic health and fitness forums. My experience with forums back then was a negative one. Luckily things are looking better on the fitness front. These days, there are several that are worth your time. I have a few suggestions of my own, but would love to use this post to create a growing list of good forums. Feel free to add to my list in the comment section!

[On the Internet, you have to weed through a lot of pollution to find the good stuff. Once you find a good forum make sure and protect it and keep it from degrading into something bad.]

It's Family Fun Fitness Time!!!

Obesity costs America billions and billions of dollars each and every year.
And, in case you hadn’t heard it, America is having a little trouble balancing it’s books lately.
So, in an effort to trim the fat and earn some tax dollars, America is going to war against obesity.
And, damn it, this is a war that America is determined to win.
And here’s how they’re going to do it…..starting from the top and working our way down to your local city government.

President Obama

The President has said that he is in favor of of a sin tax on soda.

As well, he and the family have become unofficial spokespeople for both the local and organic food movements.

The Federal Government

Obesity will likely be addressed in the new healthcare bill, but to what extent is anybody’s guess at this point.

The CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity provides all sorts of information […]
